Knuckle Down

That has been the mantra of the month. The amazing freeze of the highlands last month has been replaced by a bit of a miserable thaw and damp weather. These things work out in good timing sometimes.

It’s less than a month until I move house and working super hard and saving every penny has been the main thing to worry about. It’s worth worrying about too since a couple of unexpected setbacks have meant I’ve needed to drop some other plans and work even more than I expected. The recession bites! Must bite back...

The prize though will be worth it. A good place to live for Claire and I, and my own personal domestic dream of having space for a training board in my house for the first time. Good motivation to work hard.

The great thing about working is that there is also plenty of time for uninterrupted spells of training after work. The ratio of elbow rehab:training time is lurching gradually in favour of training, and as is normal for coming out of an injury I feel pretty good and strong.

Between showers (week long ones) I caught the Glen’s boulders dry and returned to the roof sloper project on the Heather Hat. I finally managed to stick the second sloper after a million tries last winter. A good feeling to have made irrefutable strength gains. This for me is one of the feelings from training – new possibilities, where before it was the same old impossibilities.

So it’s another month of hard work, hard training and putting in the hours for payback later. Such is the way with creating good stuff – the long slog in the middle between starting out and the end is the hard, but crucial bit.

Some stuff happening right now:

I’ve been writing a series of introductory articles for the Mountaineering Council of Scotland’s site and magazine on improving at climbing. They are focused very much on concepts that apply to everyone from beginners at climbing to those who have been climbing for years. The articles are here with more to come in the next few months.

On Tuesday (March 3rd)I am in Leeds giving a lecture on risk, climbing and Echo Wall. I’m giving this lecture again on March 8th in Aberdeen as well as a talk on improving at climbing. Details and tickets for these here.

Claire has just finished editing the showreel for this year’s Fort William Mountain Festival which is a couple of weeks away. It’s got the best bits of many of the films showing this year. I’m lecturing there on Thursday March 12th. Check the showreel:

Trojans fall in NCHSAA 2nd round

LIVE WEBCAST courtesy of EZ Stream Web Services

Southern Durham's Marcus Wells nails a three at the buzzer for an incredible 81-78 comeback win and end the Trojans play-off run. Garner fails to hold a huge lead, as much as 22 at one point as the Falcons bomb away from behind the arc en route to the Sectional Finals. Senior DaMetrius Upchurch comes up huge in his final game for the Trojans with 30 points and 14 rebounds. Garner had every thing going their way through the first half, building a 20 point lead with less than a minute to go to the break. After a first quarter that had the Trojans hitting 11-of-14 shots, it certainly looked like the poor shooting woes of the past two games were all but forgotten. Jamal Barrett dishes out assists like candy, en route to seven in the half, several to Upchurch who pockets 7-of-eight first half shots against the much smaller Falcon frontline. Upchurch adds four blocks as well, keeping S.Durham at just 27% shooting for the half. But the fouls began to mount, sending the Falcons to the line sixteen times and they hit thirteen.

Albert Smith hits one of two from the line to give Garner a 50-31 lead early in the third quarter. From there S.Durham goes on a 14-0 run. Garner has 12 turnovers in the third quarter alone, going nearly 4 minutes without hitting a shot from the floor. The lead narrows to just six after three quarters 60-54. In the final period, S.Durham continues a frenzied shooting streak that has them hitting 11 of sixteen from 3-point range for the game. But still Garner is in some control, with Emanuel McClain's tosses from the line putting Garner up 74-63. But another two minute drought has the Falcons narrowing the gap to 75-72. Barrett drives to the hoop and is fouled, hitting one of two for a four point lead. On the ensuing S.Durham possession, Upchurch appears to swat his seventh block of the night, but is called for his fifth and final foul instead. The disqualification is his first of the season and sends Geoff Hunter to the line where he hits both to cut the Garner lead to 76-74 with 1:26 left.

Karl Agenor is fouled quickly. He misses both shots but slips through the lane for his ninth rebound and scores to put Garner back up 78-74. Stacy Carroway blocks Reese Wiggins drive but again the refs see otherwise and Wiggins' two free throws narrows it to 78-76 with an even minute to go. A Garner turnover allows Wells to knot the game with 47 seconds left. Setting up for the final shot, Garner commits a backcourt violation giving the Falcons a last shot with 23 seconds to go. Milking the clock, two shots are off the mark but a Garner missed outlet with just 3 seconds sets up the miracle heave by Wells and end the Trojan season at 18-10.

Licking the lollipop

An Independent article from Monday takes aim at rap music's potential to influence young people into degrading and unpleasant behaviour. And they're not referring to your mum trying to bogle to Elephant Man either. Research from the University of Pittsburgh showed a link between teenagers who listen to music which features "degrading" lyrics of a sexual nature and younger sexual activity. They don't claim that the lyrics cause this earlier sexual activity, but that the two go hand in hand. Or gland in hand, if you prefer.

Two criteria were used in establishing whether lyrics were degrading. The words
had to be based on a purely physical, non-emotional description of sexual
activity and there had to be a “power differential”, with one sex expressing
physical dominance over another, Professor Primack said. An example of a non-degrading sexual lyric was: “Come a litter closer baby, I feel like srippin’ it down.” While a degrading lyric would be: “After you work up a sweat you can play with the
stick.”

We looked at the lyrics of rap here a while ago on this blog and it's always been an interesting topic for language investigations over the years, but maybe the language angle is what makes this interesting for us on this course: can lyrics actually influence or shape our behaviour? Does language control us or is it a lot more complicated than that? I suppose one argument against this determinist position would be that young people who listen to music with such lyrics may already have different, more accepting, attitudes to "degrading" sexual imagery and therefore be more likely to seek out such music. Then again, we might argue that our perceptions about what's an acceptable way to treat our bitches - sorry, I mean life partners and Strong Independent Black Females - might be skewed by exposure to such lyrics. Perhaps they naturalise certain types of behaviour which we would previously have seen as wrong or demeaning.
This blog post about an article by Zoe Williams in The Guardian is worth a link if you want to follow it up. It also featured on last summer's ENA6 paper, so it's good practice for those of you looking to get some work done for June 18th and the dreaded ENA6 exam.

GR8 news 4 ur kids

Catching on to texting a few years after the UK, the USA is now going through the same kind of media hysteria about texting destroying literacy and language skills that we had. In this brief article on an American news website and this from the BBC website research from Coventry University (whose similar research we covered here in 2006) creates a good news story about the link between texting and literacy.

But not everyone's convinced: have a look at the comments after the article for a prescriptivist angle.

This is the sort of language debate you should be ready for on ENA6. Is texting ruining our language? Is texting just another style we can switch in and out of in different contexts? Do teh arguments against language change have any kind of logic to them or are they less to do with language and more to do with fear of change?

Trojans rally for NCHSAA win

LIVE WEBCAST
The Trojans play "survive and advance" with a hard fought 75-74 comeback win over Green Hope in the NCHSAA 4A play-off opener. The top-seeded Trojans trail most of the game and by as much as twelve. Senior DaMetrius Upchurch sinks two critical free throws with 48 seconds to go for the final margin. A frenzied finish has the Falcons coming up short on their final four possessions and Garner moves on to second round action Wednesday night. Upchurch paces the Trojans with 21 and ten rebounds with Cordero Hunter adding 17 and Albert Smith 13. Another icy shooting night for the Trojans who manage just 25-of-64 from the floor but a 28-16 rebound advantage saves Garner. Sophomore Stacy Carroway comes up big for Garner with 6 boards and Hunter, Smith and Karl Agenor add four each. Green Hope gets 24 from All-Tri 8 guard Shawn Shaffer who was a stellar 11-of-16 shooting. The Falcons race to a 23-12 first quarter lead after a stirring rendition of the National Anthem by Savannah Richmond, a fifth-grader at Yates Mill Elementary. The Falcons hit a blistering eleven of their first 14 shots.

Garner starts to chip away opening the second quarter with Agenor feeding Emmanuel McClain on the break. After a Shaffer lay-up, Smith hits consecutive threes from downtown and McClain hits another to cut the marging to just 25-23. Max Povse and Shaffer keep the Falcons on top, with Povse equally efficient missing just one of his six first half shots. The Falcons carry a five point margin into the half as they post a 67% shooting percentage (18-of-27) while Garner is a very poor 38%. Barrett's trey and two by Agenor knots the game at 46 2:32 into the third. But again the Falcons grab breathing room with a 17-10 run to finish the quarter. Upchurch scores and converts the three point play for Garner's first lead at 51-50. Upchurch assist to Hunter on the break with 2:56 to go is the last time he touches the ball for the period.

Carroway finishes the third quarter and then opens the fourth with blocked shots setting up Smith for a three, followed by Hunter from long-range to draw Garner to 63-62. After two Falcon baskets, Garner knots it again on a Hunter free toss, Smith's steal and score and Upchurch's two from the line to make it 67-67 with 4:06 to go. Kameron Bryant scores but misses the free throw. Upchurch slams it and adds a lay-up to put Garner up 71-69. An Archer three and Bryant drives in for a lay-up for a 74-71 Falcon lead with 1:42 left. McClain follows a missed Trojan shot to narrow it 74-73 with 56 seconds to go in the game. Green Hope's 18th turnover allows Upchurch to post up down low and is fouled. He hits both free throws for a 75-74 Garner lead with 48 seconds left. Upchurch blocks a Povse drive on ensuing possession but the Trojans mishandle the break for their 14th turnover with just 10.8 left. Despite three missed Trojan free throws, Green Hope cannot convert and Garner staves off the final 48 seconds without the tying score to advance to round #2 to face So.Durham, a 59-57 winner over Broughton:

Sebuah Titik Pengharapan

Selangkah demi selangkah kutapaki jalan terjal ini
Menembus rimba belantara sunyi
Satu tekad telah tertancap
Demi menggapai sebuah titik pengharapan
Kilau cahaya surya yang setia mengiringi langkahku
Mampu menguras sisa- sisa peluh dalam raga yang lemah ini
Batu- batuan pun membisu tanpa sapa
Membuatku terperosok dalam lembah keputusasaan
Ketika langkah ini kurasakan semakin berat
Titik itupun terasa semakin menjauh

Claire nominated for a Bafta!

I got home the other day to find Claire on the phone looking very cheery. Turns out it was Bafta Scotland on the phone saying she had been nominated for best director in the Bafta new talent awards for Echo Wall. Both of us were fairly dumfounded by this news to say the least.

It’s brilliant though that the quality and commitment of Claire’s work on Echo Wall has been recognised at such a high level. Claire has been creative all the time I’ve known her. But with Echo Wall she did what most others wouldn’t manage, she took it to another level by shooting footage that was extremely arduous and ultimately frightening to get, not to mention a year of long days and nights of work and all our savings and earnings to turn it into a finished film. I’m really pleased for her.

So next month the kilt will be coming out for the Bafta ceremony in Glasgow!

Trojans upset by the Wildcats in GNRC Tournament

LIVE WEBCAST courtesy of EZStream Web services

Ben Jacobs torches the Trojans for 33 points and the Trojans frigid shooting dooms the top seed 65-63 in the semi-final of the GNRC Tournament. Garner shows no resemblance to the hot shooting they enjoyed during their eleven game win streak. Defensively the Trojans repeatedly force Wildcat miscues to the tune of 14 steals and 25 turnovers in all, but convert just 12 into scores. Garner finishes a pawltry 38% from the floor, on 23-of 59 shots. Jacobs rules the paint for the Wildcats, hitting 10-of-14 from the floor and 13-of-15 from the line and adds 12 rebounds for an impressive night. The Trojans are equally inept at the free throw line, hitting just 11-of-20 while the Wildcats convert 16-of-19 at the stripe. The Wildcat win sends them into the finals against Knightdale tomorrow night.

Despite the cold shooting, the Trojans still have a chance as they cut a ten point Wildcat lead to one with 1:41 to go. Two DaMetrius Upchurch free throws with just over a minute left gives Garner their first lead since the 2:14 mark of the first quarter. But Jacobs streaks the floor to score right back and regain a 63-62 Wildcat margin. Karl Agenor is tied up on a rebound (his eleventh rebound of the night) with the possession arrow in W.Johnston's favor. Upchurch comes up with Garner's 10th block of the night (to go with 11 steals) and Jacobs fouls him on the rebound. Hitting one of two, knots the game at 63 all with 19.6 seconds to go. On the ensuing possession, Jamal Barrett makes a great block on Jacobs, but DeOnte Anderson slips through the lane and lays in the follow for the winning score with 4.2 to go. Garner turns the ball over on their last chance to send W.Johnston into the finals. The Trojans will open NCHSAA 4A playoff action Monday night at home against an opponent to be determined:

Cunning stunts and gran slang

Last week's Sun has a fairly hopeless guide to teen slang (see picture) which not only puts slang words together in a silly order but also stereotypes teenagers as Vicky Pollard wannabes.

So we get lots of terms like fam, breh, bare and hater which have been knocking around for years (probably centuries in the case of breh), and others which I've not come across like piff (good), stunting (showing off) and shifted (arrested).

But what I want to know is,where does bare come from and what's its etymology? Is it anything to do with the American expression "loaded for bear" (see here). And secondly, why do young south Londoners pronounce seen as skeen? Is it anything to do with the original 1960s (?) slang word being spelt as scene and the new way of saying it just a deviant, phonetic pronunciation? These are proper questions, so if you've got any ideas please say...

And in today's Telegraph there's a story about a new dictionary aimed at young people, designed to help them understand "gran slang". As the article points out "Many of the words used by teenagers today are incomprehensible to older generations, but it must be equally baffling for younger people trying to get to grips with the lexicon of their grandparents" and the creator of the dictionary wittily adds "No longer will the word mint, used by young people to denote approval, be confused with a request for a hard-boiled, peppermint-flavoured sweet". The wag...

Edited 16.03.11 to add:
Jonathon Green, the famous slang lexicographer, has offered the following etymology of bare on The Dabbler's website:

bare, which is also found as bere, is an import from the Caribbean. It began life as a Bajan (Barbados) word meaning ‘nothing but’, i.e. ‘too much of’ and links back to and plays on the standard English barely (enough). It seems to have emerged in the UK in the late Nineties, first among black and then all teens, who use it to mean ‘many’ or ‘lots of’.

For ‘bare’ examples, I offer a 2003 interview with Dizzee Rascal in Vice Magazine:
I got kicked out of bare schools. [...] Bare people were getting pregnant around me in the manor, getme? Bare girls were getting breeded up. [...] There’s just so many talented people but road gets a hold of them, bare people I know could have made it. Research from the University of Chicago reported here and here suggests that parents who use gesture with their children in the early stages of language development are more likely to see their kids grow up to have higher productive vocabularies and be better prepared for school.

As you'll probably have looked at with interactional theories of language development - Jerome Bruner, Catherine Snow et al. - there's a belief on the part of many child language experts that parents and caregivers can use body language and gesture to help children develop their language skills.

The Guardian report explains:

Meredith Rowe and Susan Goldin-Meadow, from the University of Chicago, worked with 50 young families from different socio-economic backgrounds to investigate why some toddlers seemed to grasp language more quickly than others.

They filmed 14-month-old children during an hour and a half of play with their parents and noted down the words and gestures that were used. Later, when the children were aged four and a half, they were given a vocabulary test to assess their language skills.

The video sessions showed that better-educated parents used gestures more often, and as a result, their children learned to use hand signals themselves in a variety of ways. On average, toddlers from well-educated families used gestures to convey 24 different meanings during a 90-minute play session. Toddlers from less-educated families used gestures to convey only 13.

They go on to add, "By learning to gesture, toddlers pick up new words more quickly because it prompts parents to name the object the gesture is directed at. For example, if a child points at a doll, the parent might repeat the word "doll" a few times, boosting the child's chances of remembering the word".

But is it as simple as that? Socio-economic status is very important in this study and it's pretty clear that children from higher income backgrounds tend to have more communication and interaction with their parents (...he says while tapping at a keyboard ignoring his 3 kids who are watching TV or playing on a DS...) as this 2004 Guardian article by Polly Toynbee points out in its reference to research by Hart and Risley into social class and language.

I'm sure the researchers will have looked at this issue and I'm probably missing something obvious, but from the reports printed here I can't see any reason to think that gesture has that much to do with anything: just because a child from a higher income family uses more gesture at 14 months and then goes on to have a higher productive vocabulary at 54 months, doesn't necessarily mean that any improvement is down to gesture. Surely the socio-economic status of the child is what is really influencing the leap? And while there's clearly a case for arguing that gesture can help improve children's language development, is it really more important than the child's opportunities for communication, the level of interaction they receive from parents and the environment the child grows up in? I'm not so sure...

n00bs get pwned

At the root of all internet dialects is leet, the most impenetrable of them all. Leet was what hackers and gamers spoke to each other on bulletin boards back in the 1990s. Since then, it has grown and morphed, hitting a peak in 2005. “Leet”, often spelt “l33t”, is, as mentioned, a phonetic version of the word “elite”, a reference to the technocrats who used it. Leet grew in chat rooms as a means of creating a linguistic in-crowd that excluded uninitiated newcomers, or “n00bs”.

This is how leetspeak (l33tsp34k) is explained by Anna Leach in a fascinating article in yesterday's Independent. With internet slang becoming mainstream and even your granny knowing something about LOLcats and perhaps even having her own level 27 Nightelf hunter in World of Warcraft, the article takes a look at where it's all come from and how it connects to other forms of slang.

As the lexicographer Jonathan Green (speaker at next June's SFX Language workshops, fact fans!) explains "BBC English is what the establishment speaks. Slang is the language that intentionally does the opposite. We are hard-wired as humans to take the piss – we do it politically and socially, and we do it linguistically". And internet slang is very much part of this.

David Crystal (another speaker in June) adds “Fifty years ago, if you invented a word it would take approximately 20 years to get it into the dictionary. Now you can invent something and it’s all over the net in days,” making it clear that while many of the sources of slang are not new - abuse, in-group markers of identity, terms of approval and excitement - that the speed at which they proliferate is something we haven't seen before.

The article goes on to explain how l33t words are often formed and how they are used:
A combination of typos, computer-game references and tech jargon, leet is intentionally baffling. It is also the common ancestor of lolspeak and snark: lolspeak has inherited its linguistic tinkering, while snark has taken on the ethos of the egotistical put-down. “To make leet,” says Kat Hannaford, news editor of T3 magazine’s website, “you manipulate language by adding -xor or -age on the end of words.” Some leet words, such as “w00t” (hooray) and “I have skillz” are becoming mainstream, while other words and phrases reflect the preoccupation of the élite with putting down n00bs, or the analogous pleasure-rush of hacking someone else’s computer system. “Elite speakers are arrogant,” Hannaford says. “There’s a lot of ego in leetspeak.”

Howell commits to Averett

Garner's BG Howell Senior B.G. Howell has committed to Averett University to play football next fall. The Cougars recruited Howell as quarterback which was an important factor in his decision. Howell handled both the quarterback and kicking duties for the Trojans this past season. He threw for 1300 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 5 scores as the Trojans reached the NCHSAA play-offs for the 25th consecutive year. As the Trojan placekicker, Howell connected on 39 extra points and 3 field goals. the three position star also handled all punting duties with a 44.3 yard per punt average, with a long of 71 yards. Howell was named to GNRC All Conference Team, and was named GNRC Special Teams Player of the Year. B.G. was also a star in the classroom and was named to the GNRC All Academic Team. He is expected to compete for both the quarterback and kicking duties. Averett University is located in Danville Virginia as a member of the USA South Conference. Congratulations B.G. for continuing the Garner Winning Tradition!!!

Trojans advance to 2nd round of the GNRC

The Spartans elect to employ a slowdown offense to avoid another thirty point loss to the Trojans. Didn't work. Garner wins 62-36 for their 11th straight win and advance to a Thursday night game against #4 seed W.Johnston. DaMetrius Upchurch scores 18 with five rebounds and Cordero Hunter adds 13, on 6-of-9 shooting. After Jamal Barrett buries a three pointer to open the game, SSS plays pitch-n-catch for roughly 3 minutes without a shot. The Spartans are plagued by 19 turnovers, 6 Trojans steals and 6 blocked shots. Not taken totally out of their offense, Garner still manages an even 50% from the floor (25-50) as they do come up short of their season average scoring by roughly 20 points. Garner uses their limited first quarter possessions well, hitting seven of nine shots. The Spartan stall forgets they need to score as well, they hit just 1 of three in the quarter falling behind 19-2. In the second, Garner fails to keep up their hot shooting but still lead by twelve at the end of the half that took just 30 minutes to play, tip to finish. During the second half, Garner maintains a double-digit margin, stretching it to more than twenty as the final quarter begins and Coach Gray calls on the reserves. The Trojans (17-8) will play at home on Thursday at 7:30PM:
