Lady Trojan Soccer Downs East Wake

The Lady Trojans Soccer team returned home to Trojan Stadium tonight as they hosted the East Wake Warriors and picked up a win heading into Spring Break as they Lady Trojans picked up a 4-1 overtime win.

Amber Eberhard scored Garner's first goal in the opening half and the Lady Trojans maintained the 1-0 lead until the five minute mark of the game when East wake scored to tie the game.

The late goal by the Warriors led to overtime, but, that's where Garner dominated. The first overtime goal was nailed home by Ashley Ford with an assist from Michelle Roth. That would be all the scoring in the first half of the overtime but in the second overtime period, Garner put a cap to the game as Ashley Ford scored again this time with help from Brittany Lambert and finally to cap the scoring, Amber Eberhard scored off an assist from Gabi Dugal, and Garner went on to the 4-1 win.

Varsity Baseball Falls in a Wild One

In the two regular season meetings between Garner and Middle Creek last season, the two teams combined for 41 runs so it should come as no surprise that on Wednesday afternoon at Trojan Park, it would be another offensive showdown, but it would be the Mustangs who came out on top 14-6.

Garner struck first in the bottom of the first as Jesse Fisher led off the game reaching on a throwing error and advancing to second of the poor throw. Two pitches later, Fisher stole third and the throw from Middle Creek catcher, Jimmy Boyd went sailing into left field to give Garner a 1-0 lead.

Trojan starter, Matt Powell came back out for his second inning of work and after allowing a lead off hit in the first looked like he would get out of the jam but a defensive miscue came back to haunt him as Dylan Drayton had a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at one.

But, Garner came right back in the bottom of th second as Hunter Brown began his day at the plate with a line drive double to left field. Brown later scored on a RBI fielder's choice by starting pitcher, Matt Powell.

Powell got the Mustangs to go in order in the third inning on a great play up the middle by Jared Newbry the Freshman took the ground ball, stepped on second and threw out Matt Laxton at first for the double play to end the Middle Creek third.

After Garner failed to score in the third, Middle Creek came back with a run in the fourth as Seth Watkins scored on a error to tie the game at two. However, the game would not stay tied for long as Garner came storming right back in the bottom of the frame.

With two outs in the inning, Hunter Brown came back to the dish and on the first pitch he saw from Mustang starter, Seth Watkins, Brown turned on the pitch and hooked it just inside the left field fair pole to give Garner a one run lead.

Things began to go south for the Trojans in the fifth as Middle Creek just used the old baseball sayin' and "hit 'em where they ain't" that equated to 11 Mustang batters coming to the plate and six runs crossing the plate and going to the bottom of the fifth, the Mustangs had taken a 8-3 lead.

To the Trojans credit they did not quit as they came back with another run in the fifth as Brett Bailey struck out to start the inning, but reached as the ball got away from the Mustang catcher. Bailey would score two batters later on a throwing error by Middle Creek reliever, Landon Baliant.

After the Mustangs plated three runs in the top of the sixth, Garner came back up looking to cut into the lead and did. Brett Walters singled to left to start the sixth, which brought up the catcher, CJ Schmidt, with a 3-2 count on CJ, he hammered a pitch to deep left field that cleared the wall for his second home run of the season and made the score 10-6 in favor of Middle Creek.

Unfortunately, the Trojans could not get any closer as they found offense in the seventh and came away with a 14-6 win over Garner.

The Trojans are back in action on Friday when they travel to Smithfield-Selma for a 7:00 first pitch. The JV game will begin at 4.

Women's Soccer Picks Up Win

After a tough loss to West Johnston to start the conference season earlier this week, Coach Corsbie and the Lady Trojan soccer team was back at home tonight in a key conference tilt aganist the Clayton Comets.

The Lady Trojans played an inspired effort as they took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Brittany Lambert and on the goal, the assist from Amber Eberhard.

That goal would turn out to be the game winner as the Lady Trojans picked up their first conference win of the season.

Trojan Rally Falls Short in Home Opener

It was the same story for the Varsity Baseball team on Monday afternoon as they opened the home portion of their schedule as they hosted the Broughton Capitals at Trojan Park. The Trojans fell behind early and made a valiant comeback before falling to Broughton 7-5.

Broughton jumped on the board first as after a walk and error allowed the inning to continue, Capital first basemen, Thomas Butler, homered just over the left field wall to make it 3-0 Caps. That would be the biggest mistake that Garner started Will Norris made on Monday in his varsity debut.

Norris would give up four more runs over the course of the next three innings, however, of the seven totals runs he allowed, only four of them were earned, due to the fact the Trojans made a season high five errors on Monday afternoon.

Despite the pour fielding performance, the Trojans refused to quit as in the bottom of the fifth, the Trojans found some life offensively. With one out, Jesse Fisher decided to take matters into his own hands after he was hit by a pitch, Fisher, stole second and third to put himself in scoring position and later scored on an Alec Hulmes double to right field. Colin Perry also reached base via a walk and later scored on a Hunter Brown RBI single and Hulmes would also cross home in the fifth on a Jackson Pleasant double to cut the lead to 7-3.

After holding Broughton scoreless in the top of the sixth, Garner again found some offense as with one out, Fisher again took matters into his own hands with a infield bunt single down the third base line to put himself on base.

Colin Perry was then hit in the back and Alec Hulmes singled to load the bases. Hunter Brown followed Hulmes and walked to bring home a run and Jackson Pleasant had a sacrifice fly to drive in the fifth Trojan run of the game.

However, Garner would get no closer as in the seventh, the Trojans went one, two, three and will hope for better luck on Tuesday when they host the West Johnston Wildcats in the Conference opener. The JV team will play at 4 followed by the Varsity at 7:00 at Trojan Park.

Soccer Falls in Overtime

Garner honored their seniors at Trojan Stadium on Monday night as they hosted the newest edition to the GNRC Harnett Central. After playing a tight first part of the week. Garner got the first scoring chance of night, as Senior Matt Wescoe, scored on a PK to give Garner a 1-0 lead.

That would be the score at halftime as Garner honored their four seniors. However, in the second half, Harnett Central scored to tie the game at one and the game went to overtime. Harnett Central scored the only goal of the overtime session and Harnett Central spoiled Garner's senior night defeating Garner 2-1.

**JV Trojans lost 3-0.

Soccer Falls to East Wake

After playing the night before at home, the Varsity soccer team hit the road on Wednesday night as they played their third game in as many days as the Trojans were at Sasser Stadium to take on the East Wake Warriors.

The two schools played to a 0-0 tie in the first meeting, however, this meeting would go the way of the Warriors as they downed the Trojans 3-1. The loan Trojan goal of the night came from Cory McCormick.

Garner will be back at home on Monday night for Senior Night against Harnett Central.

Soccer falls to Spartans

After being the defeated by Southeast Raleigh last night, the Varsity soccer was back at home on Tuesday night as they took on Smithfield-Selma in another GNRC match. The Trojans had a productive night scoring three goals on Tuesday night as Garner got goals from Connor Torruella, Matt Wescoe and Chase Morgan and Wescoe added an assist as well.

However the three goals would not be enough as Garner fell to Smithfield 4-3. The Trojans will be back in action tomorrow night as they travel to East Wake at 6:30.

Soccer Downs Bulldogs

Garner and Southeast Raleigh had to wait over a month to play a game that was scheduled back in the earlier part of the conference season and tonight the two teams met at Southeast Raleigh High School on Thursday night.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half time with a new wrinkle for the Trojans as Matt Wescose was in goal for the Trojans in the first half. Garner got a goal with 17 minutes to play in the second half as Connor Torruella found the back of the net to give Garner a 1-0 lead.

Southeast would tie the game at one and send the game to overtime, that's when Garner made a goal keeper change and put Wescoe back up top. The two teams would play a scoreless first overtime session and the second extra stanza, Wescoe hammered home a goal on a PK with just 7 minutes to play.

Southeast would not be able to recover, as Garner came away with a 2-1 road victory.


***The JV team also picked up a win over Southeast, defeating the Bulldogs 3-0.

Varsity Soccer Falls to Clayton

The Varsity soccer team dropped another tough GNRC match on Wednesday night as they fell to Clayton 5-3.

Garner got goals from M. Murrah, C. Tourella, M.Wescoe with goals and C.Tourella(2) and M.Wescoe(1) with assists.


The JV team came away with a 2-1 win over the Comets on Wednesday night.

Trojans Fall to Wildcats

Garner hit the road on Monday night as they traveled to Benson to take on the West Johnston WIldcats. After going 1-0-1 last week, the Trojans were hoping to contiune their hot play.

West Johnston took a 1-0 lead in the first part of the opening half, however, Garner would quickly tie the game on a Matt Wescoe free kick from 30 yards out, and the two teams would go to halftime tied at one.

The second half would be a lot of defense, and the game was headed to overtime with the game still tied at one. West Johnston exploded in overtime as they pulled away to defeat Garner 4-1. The Trojans are back in action on Wednesday

Soccer Downs Harnett Central

After playing a nip and tuck game the entire way, the Varsity Soccer team defeated Harnett Central 2-1 on the road Wednesday night.

Garner got a first half goal from Matt Wescoe to take a 1-0 lead. Harnett Central also got a goal in the opening half, to tie the game at one. However, the Trojans had several goals disallowed in the first half due to fouls that were called.

The two teams came out and played another very competitive half but Garner would get the go ahead goal on a Wescoe assist with 31 minutes to play to give Garner a lead they wouldn't relinquish as Garner defeated Harnett Central 2-1.

JV Trojans Fall to Harnett Central

The JV Trojans played another very competitive match, but in the end Harnett Central would rally to defeat Garner 3-2.

Garner had a lead late in the game however, Harnett Central was awarded a Penalty Kick and would win the game 3-2. Garner got goals from Alex Lambert and Alex Shorsher, but it wasn't enough as Garner fell 3-2.

Soccer Ties East Wake

The Varsity Soccer team returned home on Monday night as they took on the East Wake Warriors who came into play as the top team in the Greater Neuse River Conference. The Trojans held their own in the first half as they played to a scoreless tie going to halftime.

However, before the second half could begin a storm came up and as lighting was spotted, the officials halted play for 30 minutes, but the lightning never stopped and after some confusion the game was called and according to the NCHSAA rule book, if a game reaches halftime and can not be finished, it is counted as an official game. Meaning the game ends in a 0-0 tie.

JV Falls to Warriors

The JV Trojans played a scoreless first half and just missed a goal in the waining moments of the first half. In the second period of play, East Wake was able to get a Penalty kick and score and the Warriors also scored later in the half to defeat the JV Trojans 2-0.

Soccer Loses Overtime Contest with Spartans

Coming off a win over Knightdale in their last game, the Varsity soccer team returned to action on Monday night as they traveled to Smithfield-Selma to take on the Spartans.

The first half was low scoring and at the end of the first half of football, Garner was up 1-0. The second half would be back and forth as SSS played behind for most of the second half as Garner took a 3-2 lead with goals by Matt Wescoe, Mat Murra and Kyle Tobin.

Garner would get another goal to go up by two at 4-2 as Wescoe banged home a corner kick. Matt Wescoe added his third goal of the game for a hat trick with 9 minutes left to make it 5-2 Trojans, but that's when the Spartans began on the comeback trail as they scored two very quick goals to make it 5-4 with 8 minutes to play and would later tie the game at five and send the game into overtime.

Garner struck first in the overtime with seven minutes left to take a one goal lead at 6-5 however, the Trojan defense tired and SSS scored on a indirect PK as the ball hit the off a Garner player, then hit the cross bar and off the back of a Trojan and into the net to tie the game.

Following the tough luck goal, SSS score two more goals to defeat Garner 8-6 in overtime. Garner will be back on the road Wednesday when the travel to Southeast Raleigh at 6:30.

The JV Soccer team picked up their second win of the season as they blanked SSS 4-0 on Monday night. The Garner charge was led by Alex Lambert who light up the Spartans to the tune of three goals as Garner defeated SSS 4-0.

The JV Trojans are back on the road Wednesday at Southeast Raleigh at 4:30

Soccer Breaks out in Big Way Against Knightdale

After having a rough go of it in the early part of the season, the Varsity soccer team got in the win column on Wednesday night as they defeated Knightdale 7-1. Garner got four first half goals as Matt Wescoe, Connor Torruella, and Chase Morgan all scored for the Trojans.

Garner would add three goals in the second half to take the 7-1 win over the Knights.

Soccer Falls in Overtime

The Varsity Soccer team took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime on Monday at Clayton. Both Trojan goals came from Matt Wescoe who scored the first goal on a Penalty Kick early after a elbow to the back of the head in the box. the Other goal was a free kick from 35 yards out with just 40 seconds to play in the half.

Clayton got a goal early in the second half, and would score again to tie the game at two all and send the game into overtime. In the extra session the two teams played a very physical period but Clayton would get the only goal and take the win 3-2.

Both JV and Varsity are home on Wednesday aganist Knightdale.

The Trojan Soccer team returned home on Wednesday night as they hosted West Johnston in the first Conference match of the 2009 season. The JV team began the night with at 4-0 loss to West Johnston.

In the Varsity game, the Trojans came out strong as Matt Wescoe scored on a PK to give Garner a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats tied the game up shortly after the Wescoe goal.

In half number two, the Trojans got a goal from Connor Torruella on a assist by Wescoe, but it wouldn't be enough as the Wildcats edged the Trojans 3-2.

Garner will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Clayton to take on the Comets. The JV game starts at 4:30 followed by the Varsity at 6:30.

Dugal Blogs During Pack's Soccer Season

Former Garner soccer standout, Paige Dugal ('08) is now on the Women's Soccer team at North Carolina State University.

Not only has Dugal had an impressive start to her season, she has started in all three of the Lady Wolfpack's games and has a goal and an assist and three points for the 3-0 Wolfpack.

In addition to her outstanding soccer season, Paige is also writing a blog as the Wolfpack embarks on their 2009 campaign. You can read Paige's blog HERE.

Tough Stretch Continues for Trojan Soccer

The boys Soccer team returned to action on Wednesday night as they traveled to Cary for their second consecutive road game and the woes continued for the Trojans as the JV team fell to the Imps 2-0.

Later in the night the Varsity team took to the field and couldn't get over the hump as Cary defeated Garner by the slim 1-0 margin.

The Trojans are back at Trojan Stadium next Wednesday when they open Greater Neuse River Conference play against West Johnston. The JV game begins at 4:30 followed by the Varsity game at 6:30.
