Trojans enjoy Senior Night sweep of the Warriors

Senior Albert Smith pours in 19 and seniors DaMetrius Upchurch and Karl Agenor post double figure scoring and rebounds to lead the Trojans to their eighth straight win and remain on top of the GNRC. Cordero Hunter adds 12 for Garner. The Trojans honor their 16 senior men's and women's basketball players and cheerleaders during pre-game festivities. Upchurch scores 18 with eleven rebounds and Agenor adds 14 and 12 boards on crisp 5-of-8 shooting. The Trojan defense stirs up 23 Warrior turnovers while Garner commits just 13, including just one in the third period. The Trojans use a 23-4 second quarter to blow up a fairly close 22-16 game and race comfortably to 14-8 on the season and 11-1 in the conference.

The Trojans open the 2nd quarter with two Agenor free throws but the gym erupts on Smith's monster slam. Agenor follows with a 3-pointer and Upchurch's follow quickly makes it 31-16. Emanual McClain's steal, one of five on the evening, and score stretches it to 36-16. Agenor scores nine in the quarter. The second half is certainly more of the same with Garner stretching the lead and allowing Coach Gray to empty his bench, with each Trojan getting playing time. Smith finishes hot hitting 7 of his last 9 shots. the "double-double" by Upchurch is his 15th of the season for the 14-8 Trojans. Garner have a quick turnaround, hosting SE Raleigh tomorrow night, at 7:30PM:

Lady Trojans get Senior Night win
Garner wins 46-36 over E.Wake. Coach Mays team uses a pressure defense to force 23 E.Wake turnovers and holding the Warriors to just 23% shooting on the night. The Trojans get 10 points from senior Alex Covington and 8 rebounds from senior Essence Chism in the win. The Trojans (5-13) race out to a 7-0 lead and never trail, celebrating Senior Night with their 4th conference win this year:

JV Trojans squelch Warrior comeback
The Trojans race to a 31-19 halftime lead and then hold on the second half for the 53-52 GNRC road win. E.Wake fails in the closing seconds on two chances for the win. Gavin Wilson has another terrific game with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists & 5 steals for Garner (14-5). The Trojans close out their season Friday at GMHS vs Holly Springs, 7:30PM game time:

Trojans place in Wake County Cheer Championships

Congratulations to the Garner Magnet High School Junior Varsity and the East Garner Magnet Middle School cheer teams! The Garner JV finished 3rd and the EGMMS team finished 2nd in their respective divisions at the Wake County Cheerleading Championships. EGMMS also won the trophy for “best dance” choreographed by our own JV coach, Ashley Castles! This is the second year in a row that one of Ashley’s teams has won the best dance trophy. Congratulations to both teams!

Good golly Miss Carol

Carol Thatcher's recent use of the word "gollywog" to refer to a black tennis player and her subsequent sacking as a BBC presenter have sparked debate about racist language and Political Correctness. On one hand, you've got those who argue that the word "gollywog" has carried racist connotations for so long that its use can never be excused, and on the other hand you've got those who argue it's harmless - just a word used to refer to a cuddly children's toy - and that it's PC (quite literally) gone mad.

Yesterday's Daily Mail had an article about it (thanks to Miss "Smudger" Smith for this) and today has several articles ranting against the totalitarian media elite who run the BBC. "Bloody communists telling us we can't call darkies and wogs what we want to" seems to be the gist of Richard Littlejohn's and Mad Melanie Phillips' columns.

Today's Guardian runs several features about the word, the doll and the recent media outrage. In one, Mike Phillips argues that the history of racial stereotyping and racist attitudes expressed through language make the word a no-no. Here, Jon Henley charts the background to the toy and the word, and here Hannah Pool gives a personal view of the word and the toy. As she says:

When I hear the word a red mist descends: I don't want to see it, or even discuss it, all I want is for people to stop saying it and take the damn thing out of my sight. I do not care whether or not it was considered racist when it first appeared in 1873, a fact which is pretty weak as arguments go, I mean come on, how many black people do you think were asked about it then?

Elsewhere, a linguist from Language Log has drawn together this story, Princes Harry and Charles' recent racist remarks into an interesting post about attitudes to racist language and taboos.

Jeffries signs with the Eagles

Senior Nadia Jeffries has signed a national letter of intent with NC Central University. Nadia was an All-State softball selection for Coaches Moe Barbour and Ricky Harris' 18-7 team this season. A Region 3 selection for the State Games underclassman team last season, also All-District and All-GNRC, Nadia excelled in the classroom as well as an All-Academic selection. Jeffries hit .378 with 10 RBIs for the Lady Trojans. Nadia also played basketball, tennis player and member of the Lady Trojan volleyball team while at GMHS. Nadia is the daughter of Maribel and Vincent Jeffries.

Trojans dominate the Spartans

DaMetrius Upchurch pours in 22 points and Cordero Hunter adds 13 as the Trojans roll to the 73-41 win at SSS. The Trojans use a 25-0 run to break open a 10-6 game en route to a 37-16 lead at halftime. Garner maintains a thirty-point advantage through most of the second half, allowing Coach Gray to give sizable minutes to his reserves. Stacy Carroway hits all four of his shots for eight points and pulls down eight rebounds as well, part of the huge 26-14 edge on the boards for Garner. Though Upchurch hits 7-for-10, as a whole it was not one of the Trojans better shooting nights as the finish 26-for-54 (48%, their first sub-.500 night in 8 games). The win is Garner's fifth in a row since the holiday break. The Trojans are back in action Friday night when they host GNRC rival, SE Raleigh:

Garner falls to SSS in the GNRC road game. The Trojans make a spirited comeback from 14 down but the Spartans paraded to the free throw line to preserve the win. Edris Lucas leads the Lady Trojans with 17, Jasmine Shaw adds 9. The Trojans shoot just 35% from the floor while the Spartans are a crisp 43%:
