ENGA1 Language Development data response part 2

OK, thanks for the responses last time. The Haribo will be with the winners on Tuesday (after I've been paid).

Here's a new one for your revising pleasure. The ages of the speakers are in brackets (years, months). The question is the same as last time: comment linguistically on 5 features of child language that you find interesting. Remember that it's not just a question of picking out things that the children say "wrong", but also looking at what they are saying and what they are achieving, and how this might place them at a certain stage of development.

Blaefummery anywhen

Today's Guardian has a good feature on regional dialects and how they're being recorded. The focus is mostly on lexical variation - dialect words - and gives a good run through of some weird and wonderful local phrases, but Stuart Jeffries also provides a bigger picture with a few interesting snippets from Susie Dent and Jonnie Robinson. The etymology of some of these dialect terms is explained too:

"Some words just seem born for their task," says Dent, "and the echoic blaefummery is one of them. It is an extension of blaflum (or bleflum/blaeflum), meaning a deception, a hoax, nonsense, or illusion; as a verb it means to cajole or impose upon. There seems to be no indisputable origin: blae means blue or livid - in colour, that is - but perhaps one can see some relation to flummery, flattery, empty talk or humbug, and which word has the charm of having started off its life meaning food, whether made of oatmeal or flour, milk and eggs."

Lady Trojans blast the Bulldogs

The Lady Trojans roll to a 12-1 win at SE Raleigh. Questionable strike calls early in the game, coach and player warnings started this game out in true fashion. Garner broke the tension in the 3rd inning with the top of the order forcing the SE Raleigh defense to stand there with no plays while the Garner runners advanced bases. Same thing for the 5th inning when Ashley Carroll, Kasey Hamrick, Hallie Warner, Nadia Jeffries, and Mary Scott Powell string of hits produced 6 runs. The SE Raleigh pitcher Strickland took herself out of the game in the 5th inning with a sore leg and relief Shana Unger was left with a mess to clean up. Busy times again

Climbing Batuka Extention 8b+, Freyr, Belgium. Photos: Jonas Haspeslagh

When I’m working these days it involves a lot of travelling. I’ve never been good with feeling at home wherever I am in the world. I tend to feel at home only at home. I guess thats my personality, but it’s annoying sometimes because my trips are always really interesting for seeing places and meeting people.

Last week among other places I’ve been in Slovenia and Belgium doing lectures to climbers. One of our goals with making Echo Wall together was for Claire and I to be able to travel to some of these nice events like Silvo’s festival together, instead of me disappearing on a bit of a lonely travel for work. We enjoyed seeing Llubljana and it’s people. Echo Wall won a prize at the festival too. It’s only the third year Silvo has run the mountain film festival there and it’s already a pretty big festival.

After a blur of Ryanair flights, working hard on my laptop and a squeezed visit to Dumbarton Rock I found myself in Belgium, climbing at Freyr the day after my talk. It was the first time I’d been out climbing in warm sunshine for several months, and it was making me impressively lethargic. In fact I reckon could have slept for the entire day. The Scots are so useless when we see a glimpse of decent weather.

But it was a valuable chance to get some routes in, so I blasted off up a long 8b+, without really remembering the moves from my warmup bolt-to-bolt. I flailed impressively at the end, but bicycled my feet on the polished footholds through to the summit moments before forearm meltdown. All I could manage after that was a sleepy flash of the 8a next door. Although my head was still asleep, I did notice that I wasn’t really that pumped. Strange because I haven’t had time for endurance training with all this work. The reason, I found on returning home was that I’ve got back down to my fighting weight for the first time since I did Echo Wall. Feeling light on the rock is something I love but don’t get the chance often.

The grabbed climbing sessions in between work and travel have been really worth it, it seems. A friend showed me a prospective eliminate on Totality at Dumbarton. I made the mistake of trying it after I’d just spent a couple of hours pounding my forearms on my endurance circuit and failed from the crux several times. So it was nice to go back on the way home from Belgium and nail it quickly between showers. Before I left I also managed a quick hour in the glen and finally destroyed the roof project on Heather Hat I was talking about before. It goes at about V12 for me, but possibly a tad easier for giants. I’m not sure. I’ll try and get some video of it if the rain stops.

Tomorrow, I am getting a new house which is very exciting. Comparatively little climbing has been done in order to make this happen, but naturally now I’m just starting to think of the coming months and churning around plans in my head.

Thankyou for all your comments about Claire’s recent BAFTA award. There’s an video interview from Scottish TV about it here

Lady Trojans blast SSS

Coach Barnes' Lady Trojans get a "hat trick" from NCSU signee Meagan Proper and the defense pitches a shutout in the 6-0 win against SSS. Amber Eberhard adds two goals and Michele Roth adds another in the GNRC win. Essence Chism records the shutout in goal.

JV Trojans win again
The JV Lady Trojans down SSS 2-1. Garner came out ready to play yesterday dominating the first half, but played on their heels for most of the second half, barely escaping with a victory. Heather McClung scored first off an assist from Ali Ward. Later in the half Ashley Ford was able to finish coming off of a cross from Maria Rivera. The Trojan defense only allowed a couple opportunities in the first half, but Smithfield-Selma was able to capitalize on one of those, placing a shot in the corner. The score at halftime was 2-1 and remained that way for the second half. The Lady Trojans (2-2-1) displayed some moments of brilliance such as the combination play between Emily Chalk and Ford, who crossed the ball to Pierce who headed the ball just wide of the goal.
