After playing a nip and tuck game the entire way, the Varsity Soccer team defeated Harnett Central 2-1 on the road Wednesday night.

Garner got a first half goal from Matt Wescoe to take a 1-0 lead. Harnett Central also got a goal in the opening half, to tie the game at one. However, the Trojans had several goals disallowed in the first half due to fouls that were called.

The two teams came out and played another very competitive half but Garner would get the go ahead goal on a Wescoe assist with 31 minutes to play to give Garner a lead they wouldn't relinquish as Garner defeated Harnett Central 2-1.

Soccer Ties East Wake

The Varsity Soccer team returned home on Monday night as they took on the East Wake Warriors who came into play as the top team in the Greater Neuse River Conference. The Trojans held their own in the first half as they played to a scoreless tie going to halftime.

However, before the second half could begin a storm came up and as lighting was spotted, the officials halted play for 30 minutes, but the lightning never stopped and after some confusion the game was called and according to the NCHSAA rule book, if a game reaches halftime and can not be finished, it is counted as an official game. Meaning the game ends in a 0-0 tie.

JV Falls to Warriors

The JV Trojans played a scoreless first half and just missed a goal in the waining moments of the first half. In the second period of play, East Wake was able to get a Penalty kick and score and the Warriors also scored later in the half to defeat the JV Trojans 2-0.

Objek Wisata di Pandeglang

Jejak Petualang.

Garner Wins Thriller on Final Play to Down Comets

LIVE WEBCAST.

If you like smash mouth football, Thursday night was for you. Garner and Clayton played a typical game as both teams lined up in the I-Formation and pounded the football, but Garner would eventually come out on top in one of the best finishes in High School Football.

After playing a scoreless first quarter, both teams got on the board in the second stanza of the game. However, Clayton stuck first on the Trojan defense as Montrelle Sanders rumbled around the left side for the touchdown the PAT was good and the Comets led 7-0.

But Garner wasted little time getting on the board as Freshman Lemond Johnson went under center for the Trojans and after making a few big runs, he would eventually fake the hand off to the running back and flash 86 yards down the sideline to the the game at 7 which would be the halftime score.

The third quarter was more of the same as both teams defense would not give an inch and going to the fourth quarter, the game was tied at seven. Clayton held the ball for the first six minutes of the games final quarter and would convert three separate first downs before quarterback, Mat Reid went in from one yard out to give Clayton a 13-7 lead. The Comets then brought Eric Winkler on to try the PAT, and coming into the kick, Winkler was a perfect 11 for 11 on extra points but this would be his first miss of the season as the kick sailed wide left and Garner still had life.

Garner began their next drive at the Trojan 30 yard line with 1:47 left in the game. Senior quarterback, Cody Woodall then began moving the ball down the field, but it looked like a repeat of last week with Garner facing a third down and ten from midfield, but Woodall found Juwan Moye who picked up the first down, Garner would nickle and dime the ball down field, but was facing a fourth down and one from the Comet 7 yard line with just two seconds left.

So it all came down to one play as Woodall dropped back to pass he looked over the middle and found Brian Watkins in the middle of the end zone who hauled in the low pass and the Trojans had tied the game at 13 with no time on the clock.

Garner then brought on Connor Torruella with no time on the clock to attempt the kick that would win the game for Garner, after a great snap from Alec Hulmes, Torruella's kick sailed through the uprights and Garner defeated Clayton 14-13 to improve to 1-1 in the Conference and 3-3 overall.

It was also a milestone night for the Garner Football Program as Head Coach Nelson Smith picked up his 100th career win and it was also the 200th win for the Program since 1990.

Garner will return home next Friday night as they welcome the Knightdale Knights to town for Homecoming 2009.

JV Trojans Run Past Comets to Stay Perfect

The JV Trojans returned home on Wednesday night as they welcomed the unbeaten Clayton Comets to Trojan Stadium, and after each team turned the ball over on their opening possession, the Trojans found their stride.

On the second Garner possession of the game, they were facing a 1st down from the Comet 38 yard line, and Tyler Hinton took it to the house for a touchdown and it was 7-0 Garner with 3:55 to play in the opening quarter.

On the ensuing Clayton possession, the Comets were moving the ball down field when Garner caused a fumble which was picked up by Tyree Chance and he returned it 46 yards to the house and after a missed PAT, it was 13-0 Garner.

After another Clayton fumble, Garner put together a seven play drive that spanned 60 yards with the big play being another 8 yard touchdown run from Tyler Hinton and just two minutes into the second quarter it was 20-0 Garner.

Clayton would finally get on the board after putting together a 12 play scoring drive that ended with a one yard touchdown run from Gary Richardson and it was 20-7 Trojans with 4:38 to play in the half.

However, the Trojans would again put points on the board with their second long scoring drive. Garner began the drive from their own 43 and used all three timeouts on the drive the big play of the drive was a when Garner was facing a second down and 12 and Vince Jeffries connected with Anthony Tucker for a 21 yard pass play down to the one yard line to set up the Tyler Hinton's third touchdown run of the night and on the PAT try, Garner converted the 2-pt conversion when Vince Jeffries found Hinton in the front of the end zone and it was 28-7 Garner going to the locker room.

The second half would be more of the same as Clayton couldn't do anything on their first drive of the second half but Garner quickly capitalized with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Vince Jeffries to Anthony Tucker and just 6 minutes into the second half, the Trojans had a 35-7 lead.

Clayton scored back to back touchdowns to make the game close at 35-21, but Garner would answer with another time consuming scoring drive. Carrington Austin found pay dirt from seven yards out to cap the drive and make it 42-21 Trojans.

The Comets added a late touchdown to make the score 42-28 which would be the final as the JV Trojans remain undefeated and will travel to Knightdale next Thursday night at 7:00

Liar, liar, your pen's on fire

Forensic linguistics is a great area of language study. You can find out more about the range of activities the forensic linguists at Aston University do from their site here, but one of its many uses is to work out if someone is telling the truth or is who they say they are. This brief article from Physorg looks at new research into handwriting and truthfulness and links it to how the brain works when telling lies.

In short, "The researchers analyzed the writing and discovered that in the untrue paragraphs the subjects on average pressed down harder on the paper and made significantly longer strokes and taller letters than in the true paragraphs".

Getting the message

The debate about young people's literacy and the impact of electronically-mediated communication rumbles on. Many commentators argue that the use of texting, instant messaging, social networking sites and online chat forums is leading to poorer spelling, less confidence in standard grammar and shorter attention spans. Others make the pint that research into such areas hasn't thrown up any real evidence to back up these claims.

We have covered the Coventry University research into texting elsewhere on this blog, but a new piece of research from Canada authored by Connie Varnhagen (and reported here) seems to offer support to the idea that good spellers in formal written tests are often the ones who use online chat more than their poor spelling counterparts. But does it mean that chatspeak is actually having a positive impact on spelling habits, or are better spellers just the ones who communicate more often in all forms of written or blended modes? See what you think:

Varnhagen's findings come from a class-based study that was recently published in Reading and Writing. A group of third-year psychology students proposed and designed a study to test whether new Simple Messaging Service, or SMS, language—also known as chatspeak—which refers to the abbreviations and slang commonly used when texting, emailing or chatting online, had an influence on students' spelling habits. The group surveyed roughly 40 students from ages 12 to 17. The participants were asked to save their instant messages for a week. At the end of the study, the participants completed a standardized spelling test.

"Kids who are good spellers [academically] are good spellers in instant messaging," she said. "And kids who are poor spellers in English class are poor spellers in instant messaging."

Does this prove anything? Your comments would be welcome...

Blood spilt at Sky pilot battle scene

Another session of perfect conditions at Sky Pilot today and the moves have been done on the big highball. Still thinking it’ll be a V14 with 10 moves of about V10 to the crux and then the big move. This progress seems like a fine excuse to abuse the training board extra hard over the the coming weeks and really go in for a good battle on this project. I definitely don't have my bouldering 'snap' back just yet after the summer of getting fit at hanging about on multipitch staminafests and walking back and forth across moors on Orkney.

I finished the session dripping with blood from the hand after slicing my little finger open good style on a blade of grass. Yes you read that right. Thats what I get for throwing caution to the wind and pulling out a few clumps of greenery from the sit start footholds without a stout pair of gloves on. In recent weeks, climbing has seemed just about the safest part of going climbing.

Soccer Loses Overtime Contest with Spartans

Coming off a win over Knightdale in their last game, the Varsity soccer team returned to action on Monday night as they traveled to Smithfield-Selma to take on the Spartans.

The first half was low scoring and at the end of the first half of football, Garner was up 1-0. The second half would be back and forth as SSS played behind for most of the second half as Garner took a 3-2 lead with goals by Matt Wescoe, Mat Murra and Kyle Tobin.

Garner would get another goal to go up by two at 4-2 as Wescoe banged home a corner kick. Matt Wescoe added his third goal of the game for a hat trick with 9 minutes left to make it 5-2 Trojans, but that's when the Spartans began on the comeback trail as they scored two very quick goals to make it 5-4 with 8 minutes to play and would later tie the game at five and send the game into overtime.

Garner struck first in the overtime with seven minutes left to take a one goal lead at 6-5 however, the Trojan defense tired and SSS scored on a indirect PK as the ball hit the off a Garner player, then hit the cross bar and off the back of a Trojan and into the net to tie the game.

Following the tough luck goal, SSS score two more goals to defeat Garner 8-6 in overtime. Garner will be back on the road Wednesday when the travel to Southeast Raleigh at 6:30.

Scoring Summary:

Goals: M. Wescoe 3, M. Murrah 1, K. Tobin 1, P. Cobix-Lara 1
Assists: M. Wescoe 2, Cobix-Lara 1, M. Nyutu 1, J. Ortiz 1

JV Soccer Gets Win

The JV Soccer team picked up their second win of the season as they blanked SSS 4-0 on Monday night. The Garner charge was led by Alex Lambert who light up the Spartans to the tune of three goals as Garner defeated SSS 4-0.

Some lectures coming up

I’m talking at various places soon if you’d like to listen to some perspectives on climbing, trying hard, choosing your battles, if succeeding on projects is really important or always worth the sacrifices and other things such as negotiating with local wildlife make progress on E11s.

First up I’m talking on Sunday night of the Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival on Oct 18th. Tickets are on sale now and more details about the festival lineup are on the EMFF site.

Soon after I’m in Dundee helping Tiso celebrate 20 years in Dundee. Full details of this on the Tiso site here.

I’ll show you some nice pieces of video of some of my best climbing efforts recently and hopefully make you see aspects of your climbing in slightly different light, as I have in the past 12 months.

The timing is everything

Blair hits the Roaring Forties (E3 5c) on Mucklehouse Wall. The route would also have described the weather conditions at the time despite the sunshine

A nice evening at Rackwick Bothy as we arrived… too late.

Blair struggles to get his gear out of his rucksack without it blowing to Norway at the top of Mucklehouse Wall. The top of the old man of Hoy and most of St John’s Head behind in the cloud.

"Just realising how much of a problem I have staying relaxed a lot of the time. I'm sat here in a beautiful evening in Rackwick with nothing to do except enjoy the moment, but all I can do I worry that tomorrows forecast is bad and how poor our chances are of getting a shot at the longhope route, never mind getting to the top.

People often tell me they think I must be patient after hearing about the extended trials of hard project climbing. But the truth is I'm actually just good at staying impatient for very sustained periods. At times, acute impatience for success or progress is utterly vital to break out of sticking points. It can be the greatest gift. But the timing of it is everything. My major failing has been to stay locked in battle psyche mode when the battle can't be fought today. Missing opportunities to relax, regroup and focus

on nights like tonight is just as bad as getting to the crux move and giving in at the discomfort of the hard effort..."

...I wrote the above words on my phone on while watching that nice sunset after arriving on Hoy with Blair and Cubby. As you can see I’d done a reasonable job of feeling positive despite the forecast telling us everywhere in the UK would be enjoying the September High pressure except us with a windy, drizzly cold front on it’s periphery. Perhaps we could have awoken to decent conditions and a successful day. But as it turned out we woke at 4am to the sound of thundering waves and drizzle.

We managed to squeeze out a couple of routes on Rora Head over two days between the rain. But not without much

chattering of teeth in the cold gale.

As soon as got back onto the Scottish mainland and back underneath the high pressure, we drove past flat calm shores and through warm sunny hills to get back to Lochaber for work. It felt just a bit cruel I must say.

Quick the sun’s out, get a route in! Blair descends Rora head while a grey seal watches from the drink below

So much as I hate to say it, thats probably the lasthope for longhope this year. Sure I could go back armed with more gear to keep us warm and dry on the wall for a forced bigwall style autumn ascent. But my goal from the start has been to climb this route in a single day push. And with the 18th pitch being E10 it’s not going to happen unless we are moving super fast and light.

But sudden freedom to make other moves on rock has been only a temporary downer. Sessions on the two big bouldering projects in Glen Nevis have underlined my wee strength increases from the new training facility. I managed two whole foot moves more than before on the Font 8c project thats featured in the committed II film. I’m even more excited about the bigfoot project which narrowly escaped all it’s individual moves being completed yesterday. I forgot how gratifyingly convenient bouldering is compared to bigwall trad dirty, birdy, turfy, soft, loose E11 sea cliffs in the windiest place on the goddam planet.

A mention goes to Kev for a one handed and helmetless ascent of Firestone E7 the other day. Nutter.

Teenglish? Allow that...

This article from Tuesday's Education Guardian is a good example of how some newspapers treat slang. While some of the definitions aren't exactly wrong (and it's tricky to say if a word meaning is ever really wrong if someone uses it in their own way with their peers) they're certainly only half the picture. To call these examples of "student slang", as Lucy Tobin does, seems to be forgetting that many of the terms (waste, wagwan, allow that/it, among others) originate specifically from young inner city (often black) roots. They might have spread to university campuses with the increasing numbers of working class and inner city students entering university over the last 10 years, but I suspect that only a handful originated on the campuses themselves.

However, grumbles aside, it's quite a good read as a source of inspiration for an ENGA3 Language Intervention (or even a B spec media text?) and there's even a quiz you can take here to test your skills.

Trojans lose Heart Breaker to Wildcats

WEBCAST.

Garner took a 14-3 lead to halftime with out the benefit of a offensive touchdown as the Trojans got a fumble recovery from Brandon Parks that went for a touchdown and after a blocked punt, Isiah Moore scored to make it 14-3 Garner at the half.

In the second half, both teams were plagued by flag after flag, but the big run of the the second half came from Demetrius Fairley who rumbled 90-yards for the touchdown and Garner was up 21-16.

However, West Johnston used a no huddle offense late in the fourth quarter and got a break as Patrick Crocker was being sacked but pitched it to CJ Fredrick just in time as Fredrick reversed fields and eluded several Trojan defenders as he ran 21 yards down to the one yard line to set up the eventual Game Winning Touchdown.

Garner had one final chance and after crossing into Wildcat territory, Garner couldn't advance the ball as Cody Woodall's hail mary pass was incomplete and West Johnston defeated Garner by the 22-21 score for the second consecutive year.

The Trojans will return to action on THURSDAY night when they travel to Clayton for a 7:30 kick-off.

JV Trojans Roll to Another Win

The JV Trojans hit the road on Thursday night as they traveled to West Johnston to take on the Wildcats in the Conference Opener, and the JV Trojan picked up right where they left off last year in the GNRC as they defeated West Johnston 26-18 on a soggy night in Benson.

Volleyball Out Duels Bulldogs

The Volleyball teams were back in action on Tuesday night as they hosted arch rival Southeast Raleigh in another key clash of Greater Neuse River Conference foes. Garner came into play Tuesday with a unblemished conference record and would have to work hard to keep their record that way.

The two teams split the first two games of the match with Garner winning game one 26-24 and Southeast winning game two 21-25.

After the Bulldogs won game three of the match, 23-25, the Lady Trojans rebounded to win the final two games 25-23 and 16-14, to take the match 3 games to 2.

Garner remains undefeated in Conference play and is back in action TONIGHT at home as they host East Wake. JV game begins at 4:30 followed by the Varsity at 5:30.

JV Demolishes Bulldogs

The JV team has come on of late as they too have played very well inside the GNRC dropping just one match and Tuesday would go almost perfect for Coach Siemering's club as Garner de-clawed the Bulldogs in just two games.

Garner took game one of the match 25-12 and then capped off their night with at 25-9 win in game two.

Soccer Falls in Overtime

The Varsity Soccer team took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime on Monday at Clayton. Both Trojan goals came from Matt Wescoe who scored the first goal on a Penalty Kick early after a elbow to the back of the head in the box. the Other goal was a free kick from 35 yards out with just 40 seconds to play in the half.

Clayton got a goal early in the second half, and would score again to tie the game at two all and send the game into overtime. In the extra session the two teams played a very physical period but Clayton would get the only goal and take the win 3-2.

Both JV and Varsity are home on Wednesday aganist Knightdale.

**JV soccer fell to Clayton 1-0.

Dugal Stays Hot for the Lady Wolfpack

Former Trojan Soccer Star, Paige Dugal ('08) has been on fire for the N.C. State soccer team this season and that trend continued on Sunday. Following a tie with East Carolina earlier in the weekend, the Pack took on Elon 2-0 with Dugal scoring the second goal for the Lady Wolfpack.

Dugal is second on the team in goals, with five, one off the lead. She also has 2 assists to compliment her scoring accomplishments and has 12 points on the year which is also one off the pace for the team lead.

Great job Paige! Keep continuing the Garner Winning Tradition!

Trojans Sink Pirates Ship

LIVE WEBCAST.

Since defeating Garner in 2006 in the Eastern Regional Final, Riverside has not defeated Garner, that trend would continue Friday night as Garner built a big first half lead then held on and stave off a Pirate rally to win the game 35-27.

On the first possession of the game, Riverside fumbled the ball away on their third play from scrimmage, Garner would quickly capitalize on the miscue as Jeremiah Davis went 35 yards into the end zone for the 7-0 Garner lead.

Following a Riverside punt on their next possession, Garner put together a long scoring drive with the big play begin a 41 yard pass play from Cody Woodall to Jeremiah Davis which led to a Cody Woodall passing touchdown to Brian M. Watkins, and the Trojans were up 14-0 to end the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, the Pirates put together a drive which lasted almost 9 minutes but only got a field goal and it was 14-3 Trojans.

Garner would then take over with just 1:52 to play in the half and two timeouts, that's when Woodall and the Trojans went to work. After back to back runs, Woodall connected on a 17 yard pass play to Davis that was followed by a 21 and 19 yards pass completions on consecutive plays for Garner and the drive was capped by a Jeremiah Davis five yard touchdown run to give Garner a 21-3 lead one they would hold until halftime.

The Trojans got the ball to begin the second half and wasted little time getting back on the board as Isiah Moore took the opening kick-off of the second half 89 yards for the Touchdown and it was 28-3 Garner.

Riverside would then begin to put together some drives together which led to a couple of scores as the Pirates would eventually cut the lead to seven points at 28-21 in the middle of the fourth quarter.

However, after Riverside cut the lead to seven, the Trojans marched the ball down the field on five plays and the drive was capped as James Skillern 20 yard touchdown run to give Garner a 35-21 lead which really put the game away.

On the final drive of the game, Riverside marched down the field as Garner was playing a very soft cover defense and the Pirates added a meaningless score for the final of 35-27.

Garner is now 2-2 on the season as they return home next week for the Conference opener against West Johnston, kick-off is slated for 7:30.

JV Trojans Blast Pirates to Improve to 3-0

The JV football team returned home on Thursday night as they hosted the Riverside Pirates at Trojan Stadium. Riverside won the coin flip to start the game, but that would be about the only thing that would go right for the Pirates on Thursday night as Garner bombarded the Pirates 55-0.

Garner's scoring onslaught began on the opening drive as Garner rushed the ball down the field and facing a 2nd and 3 on the Pirate 38, Raevon Smith broke lose and went in for the score and the 7-0 Garner lead, as the first quarter would end with the same 7-0 score.

The Garner barrage really kicked into high gear in the second quarter as on the sixth play of Garner's 3rd drive, Trojan quarterback, Vince Jeffries connected with Damian Ellis in the back left corner of the end zone and with 10:22 left in the first half, Garner led 13-0 as the point after was no good. On the ensuing Riverside possession, Pirate quarterback, Lane Garrett fired a pass down field that was complete, but to the wrong team as Tyree Chance came away with the interception.

Garner would take over with a short field and very slowly and methodically march the ball down field with six straight running plays and on the sixth play of the drive, Tyler Hinton rumbled in from two yards out and Garner would proceed to try for a two point conversion and convert as Jefferies ran it in on the quarterback keeper and Garner had a 21-0 lead.

The Trojans would add one more first half score when Raevon Smith scored from 27 yards out to make it 27-0 at halftime.

Riverside began the second half with the football, but went three and out and the Trojans took over at the Pirate 48 yard line and on the first play of the drive, Tyler Hinton scampered 52 yards for the score and the 34-0 Trojan lead.

On the next Riverside possession, Garrett would be picked again, this time by Joshua Bullock which led to another Garner Touchdown as Hinton scored from eight yards and it was quickly 40-0 Garner.

After a couple of stalled drives by each team, Riverside punted it away to the Trojans, and on the return for Garner, Anthony Tucker fielded the kick and took it down the left side 96 yards for the touchdown to make it 47-0 which would be the scored after three complete quarters.

Garner would add another score midway through the games final stanza as Roy Miles scored on a quarterback keeper and Garner would hold on to win 55-0 over the Pirates improving to 3-0 for the season.

The JV team will be back in action next Thursday at 7:00 when they travel to West Johnston to take on the Wildcats.

In the Varsity game, the Trojans came out strong as Matt Wescoe scored on a PK to give Garner a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats tied the game up shortly after the Wescoe goal.

In half number two, the Trojans got a goal from Connor Torruella on a assist by Wescoe, but it wouldn't be enough as the Wildcats edged the Trojans 3-2.

A MacLeod near miss

The west highlands almost lost two of it’s MacLeod’s to the A86 on Saturday morning after Claire wrapped her nice Audi around a tree. I was sitting in the passenger seat and believe it or not I was happy it was a direct head on hit on the tree, because if not it would have been over a retaining wall with a probably terminal drop on the other side.

A very wet road, a little too much speed for the bend, and a little touch of the brakes on the cusp of the bend were the combination of causes. The back of the car slid, followed by wild veering and steering, and the next thing we saw in the windscreen was a large tree.

We had a split second to either tense or relax in preparation for the big smash.

It felt a little surreal stepping out of a completely re-shaped car, with only a sore neck and the odd scuff between us. The split second after the impact of turning to Claire to see if she was still with me was not something I’ll forget in a hurry. Thankfully she was looking back at me and immediately agreeable to getting out of the car.

Apologies to my climbing masterclass students who had a bit of a wait for me to arrive and a slightly frazzled coach once I finally did.

Kudos to Mr Gardner for being on the money that there are often more pressing things worth worrying about than falling off rock climbs, terrorists and nasty flu viruses.

Trojans to Fall to Mustangs for the first Time

WEBCAST.

After a big 24-7 win over Broughton a week ago, the Trojans opened the home portion of their home schedule on Friday night as they welcomed, Middle Creek to town for a key intersectional match up.

Garner got the ball to begin the game and had to punt it away as the drive stalled. Middle Creek quickly went down field on their first possession on a 51 yard pass play on the Mustangs first play from scrimmage however, the Trojan defense didn't break forcing Middle Creek to try a field goal try which was no go from just 18 yards out.

The reminder of the first quarter would be a defensive battle, but Middle Creek broke through in the second quarter as Stephen Sladek scored on a 20-yard touchdown run to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead. Middle Creek would score again on their next possession as Garrett Leatham fired in a touchdown pass and at halftime, Middle Creek was up 14-0.

But the Trojan defense came out on fire in the second half as on Middle Creek's first play of the second half, Davonte Atkinson intercepted the pass and put the Garner offense in business with a short field to work with. Cody Woodall and the Trojan offense marched down field and got on the board for the first time as James Skillern scored on a reverse play from just five yards out to cut the lead in half.

On Middle Creek's very next possession, the Mustangs fumbled it away and Garner got it at the Mustang 34, and Garner wasted very little time tying the score as on the third play of the drive, Demetrius Farley scored from 17 yards out to tie the game at 14.

The game would then turn into a defensive battle until Garner took the lead. Cody Woodall connected with Jeremiah Davis on a big 46 yard pass setting the Trojans up inside the Middle Creek 10 and on the next play Bryan M. Watkins found the end zone, however the PAT was no good and Garner had to settle for the 6 point lead.

That missed extra point would prove to be big as on the ensuing kick-off, Devonte King ran it back 79-yards for the score and Matt Frongello added the extra point to give Middle Creek a 21-20 lead.

Garner would have one more chance in the fourth quarter as they put together a long drive, but came up empty when the Trojans tried to kick a field goal, but the 25 yard try was no good and Middle Creek took over and Garner couldn't find any more offense and so in a great defensive effort, Garner fell to Middle Creek 21-20.

The loss to Middle Creek was the first time that the Mustangs had ever beaten the Trojans, Garner is now 1-2 on the season as they head on the road again next week as they travel to Durham Riverside for a 7:00 kick-off from Lenny Wrenn Stadium.

Michael enjoying the St John’s head experience

It’s been another journey of big ups and downs on Orkney over the past few days with Micheal. But every time I have a fantastic trip, regardless of results. Duly, the wind prevented us from even getting to the edge of the cliff when we arrived, but spending the day soaking up the atlantic ferocity provided much amazement at the forces of nature on display on this island.

St john’s looking nearly as big and mean as it actually is.

So with conditions near the top of the wall too extreme, we tried playing on the bottom, and between the rain, we sussed out some of the lower pitches. We had a good day climbing about halfway up the wall, but fairly cumbersomely, equipped with big wet boots to get through pitches of soaking off-vertical grass pitches and wearing our Gore-Tex’s to keep out the rain and fulmar hurl.

This was the ferry on the way there! (must’ve been the training…)

I felt pretty down about the whole thing one morning. On the one day we could go on the crux pitch from the top, the dampness in the sandstone meant I pulled three small but important holds off the crux pitch. It was all seeming a bit too tenuous a goal to climb such a hard pitch here, with conditions against us and soft, rock, angry wildlife and without the previous 17 pitches using up precious energy for the big pitch. At these times, realising it’s not going to ‘go’ this trip, or even next trip, it’s hard not to let frustration reach the surface. Frustration with myself that is. On one hand I understand that I am not here for an easy route. In fact, if it just happened and was an E10 I’d probably be even a little disappointed it wasn’t harder. But on the other, I’m here to climb and to chase after that feeling of a hard climb feeling effortless. But all I seem to be doing is walking back and forth across that heather bog day after day in the rain and gale. I found myself if the messed up position of being on a climbing trip to an amazing place, but dreaming of my three metre high board at home. Thankfully such madness was only temporary.

Michael descending the jurassic park slopes to the base of the cliff. I decided to use a highly dynamic technique for the last 30 feet of this, shredding my Gore-Tex nicely.

Just to have been to the outstandingly beautiful place that lies remote from the reach of most people at the base of St John’s Head made this trip worth it.

The fulmar chicks are just getting to flying school age now, and we witnessed several amusing ‘baptism of fire’ first flights and semi-falling descents of St John’s Head from young flyers. Not all of them learned quickly enough as the above demonstrates.

1200 feet of air beneath the feet. Doesn’t seem real.

The best part about trying something completely different like this climb is realising how completely rubbish you are at the weak areas of your game. I always get climbing logistics quite spectacularly wrong. This trip was not different, with some impressive errors that seem so silly in hindsight, and a few I’ll forgive myself for needing to learn the hard way. But they are learned, and I have knowledge for next time, whenever that will be?

In praise of friction

My recent travails on the massive lump of sandstone that makes the towering St John's Head brought home an important truth about climbing for me; so many varied things are involved in the enjoyment of rock climbing, and of these, friction is an extremely important one. I spend a lot of time in my work related to climbing trying to explain in detail climbing's attractions. Yet it still seems impressively resistant to being encapsulated by any single idea or perspective. That in itself might be an appealing idea (for another day). The breadth of dimensions in which climbers find satisfaction through their activity keeps surprising me to this day. But perhaps inevitably only a few are commonly talked about.

Very fashionable again right now is the visual dimension of the 'king line'. If the climb looks amazing then it's worthwhile. The length of the climb has always been another popular measure of quality or stature in climbs, even despite bouldering and sport climbing becoming so big in the last couple of decades. But the actual interaction with the rock climbed is only often referred to in the context of the texture and shapes of different rock types and their merits. Through the medium of the activity of rock climbing, the various rocks on show around the planet can really be appreciated as quite amazing and beautiful stuff. But perhaps still in a way thats hard to put into words, a problem I'm sure geologists must surely share. Andy Kirkpatrick often laments in his lectures that even talking about the actual climbing activity is boring. True, it might not be a bountiful source of entertainment for telling climbing stories. But if the raw feeling of climbing rock brings on a magic sparked feeling of pure satisfaction even if only for elusive moments, then it's worth a more involved look. Understanding it fully might be too lofty a goal even for a whole lifetime of climbing rocks.

It was while climbing some god-awful, chossy vertical sand with the consistency of sugared pastry on Longhope that a previously subconscious appreciation of rock friction suddenly became stronger than ever. The feeling of improbable weightlessness caused when just the correct atmospheric conditions combine on pristine rock for an ethereal moment is something desperately hard to relate, but instantly recognisable to those who’ve tried climbs near enough their own limit to experience it. Two moments stand out - one was the weirdness of the ‘sticky-damp’ at Stoney Middleton on a misty, dank and humid day. Without any warning (i.e. Climbing like a potato just hours before) I flashed an apparently wet V10 without any effort, but half an hour later the weather changed and I couldn’t touch it despite it actually drying up! Another was on Rhapsody after a raging September squall had soaked and cooled the rock and rapid-dried it in a 60mph wind. I still fell off, but quite possibly I think I lost my concentration because I was trying to understand how all the holds suddenly felt so much better! Both experiences lasted only moments and neither were particularly memorable in other ways, but they obviously remained strong in the memory for a reason.

So the other day on Longhope I was cursing the complete absence of any frictional properties of this section of diabolical rock. So how then does it follow that I still enjoyed the climbing here? My second realisation in this moment was that only because the friction was so frighteningly absent, that the subtle balance required to move between the holds was so much sweeter to experience.

The message of this post? Whatever rock you always climb, think of the exact opposite, and go and climb some of that for a bit. The very aspects you might hate about it might well reveal something even stronger to enjoy.
