The Sun comments on 'silliness that is attempt to change the way we think'

Bold print stating BAN ON WORD 'YOUTH' could be seen on the front cover of The Sun on Saturday Nov 28th. The article on p4 expanded on the 'potty language changes' in the code of practice issued by the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Children, Schools and Families on how to give out conditional cautions. According to the Sun, it reads: 'A number of responses suggested the term 'youth' had negative connotations and should be replaced by 'young person'. Therefore throughout the code (with the exception of the term 'Youth Conditional Caution') 'youth' has been replaced.'
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2749902/The-word-youths-banned-by-Ministry-of-Justice-and-Dept-for-Children-Schools-and-Families-code-of-practice.html
Interestingly, the article itself refers to the young people as 'yobs' and shows a picture of a 'hoodie!' The writer states: 'Politically-correct penpushers have banned calling yobs 'youths' - so as not to hurt their feelings.'
What terms are acceptable when referring to teenage criminals? How is the Sun reader being encouraged to think about young people? Is there any difference implied or stated between young people and young offenders (or are you all the same?)
The topic is expanded upon in the Sun's editorial exploring other aspects of extreme political correctness such as 'winterval' which 'is making a mockery of Christmas.' It goes on to say that 'This stupidity is no joke. It prevents us dealing with real problems in society because people feel nervous talking bluntly about their causes.' After quoting extreme PC examples such as 'Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep' it states:' but behind all this silliness is an attempt to change the way we think.' A familiar theory?
After 'banging on about this' in class today (quote from Ben -thanks!) there was some discussion about whether I should have written 'youth language' on the board as a cause of language change or whether I should have reworded it! What do you think?

Words of warning

Two rappers have apparently been jailed for issuing blood-curdling death threats to potential witnesses in a murder case, according to the BBC news website.

"Its connection to this case and its chilling message were immediately obvious to the officers," Mr Glasgow told the court. The video had but one purpose - to threaten any witness to this incident to frighten them to such an extent that they would refuse to co-operate with the police. They made it clear exactly what it was they wanted to do to them.

"Namely, kill them or to use their own words, 'I can't wait for the snitch to drop, I still show up at his wake just to see him off'."

Old Bailey Judge Richard Hone said the lyrics meant: "Those who went chitter-chattering to police were themselves in danger of being shot."

It's a strange story and one that might be of use to anyone working on material for political correctness and language on ENGA3/4. How far does freedom of speech extend? Should we be able to say whatever we want, or can certain pronouncements put us at risk of a prison sentence?

Trojans Avenge Loss to Southern Durham with Blowout Win

WEB CAST.

Garner showed no signs of a Thanksgiving hangover on Saturday night as they came out of fire and defeated Southern Durham 77-56 at Southern Durham in the first annual Spartan Thanksgiving Classic.

The Trojans jumped out to a 27-20 lead after the first quarter as the Spartans couldn't keep up with the fast paced Trojan offense. The second quarter was more of the same as Garner kept building on their lead and Stephon Drane poured in 16 first half points to lead Garner to a 49-29 halftime lead.

While Garner had played an impressive first half, memories recalled the Spartans 22 point second half comeback over Garner in last season's second round state playoff game. However, there would be no second half comeback as Garner kept the pressure on as they got three third quarter three pointers from junior Donald Johnson as the Trojans built their lead to 61-44 after three.

In the end, Garner's depth was just too much for the Southern Durham team who only had ten players on their roster and Garner got every player some time on the floor as they cruised to a 77-56 win. Garner is now 1-1 on the season and will host Terry Sanford on Tuesday night at 7:30 at Trojan Gym.

Scoring: GARNER: S. Drane 23, D. Johnson 15, M. Koscielny 9, E. McClain 9, D. Dorsey 8,
J. McClain 6, G. Wilson 5, D. Anderson 4. S. Durham: J. Sanders 16, J. Hunter 13, A. Satterwhite 10, P. Jones 7, D. Jordan 6, E. Collins 5, K. Dores 2.

Girls Lose second game of the year

The Varsity Girls preceded the Boys game on Saturday night and the girls hung with the very talented Southern Durham team for the first half, however, in the third quarter, Southern Durham began to pull away as they defeated Garner by 20 points at 60-40.

The Girls will be in action on Tuesday night at 6:00 when they host Terry Sanford.

Eat More Chicken!

My book is off to the printers!

Phew! At long last, I finally uploaded the files of my finished book to our printer’s server this afternoon. For the last month I’ve done absolutely nothing except work on it 12 hours per day and then train. So both body and mind are feeling a little raw right now. Thankfully, some climbing outdoors is coming next week. Anyway, the lowdown is I might have stock of the book available by the second week in December if the printer runs on time. I’ll keep you posted of course, but I’ll put it up in the shop for pre-order as soon as we hear our stock is on the way.

It started out as an idea for a fairly small book centred around a theme in my head that formed throughout my study of sport science, my own attempts to get good at climbing and coaching others. That theme was that people get lost in details and settled in comfort. In doing so they lose the perspective needed to see much bigger areas to improve their level with less effort. This idea was certainly the biggest single piece of learning in my head after my education in sport science. So my book communicates that as clearly and directly as I can, with thorough explanation of all the ways this plays out and interferes with climbers’ progression.

But along the way I could see I would be able to add a lot of the detailed answers to the questions that climbers keep asking coaches and each other about how to improve. So there is a lot of detail too - information, instructions and help with just about all of what climbers need to know to improve or break out of a plateau in improvement.

My approach has been to directly point out the mistakes that climbers make in each of these areas. I can see that there are quite a few books out there now that list all the possible exercises and activities that climbers could conceivably use to help themselves. But there is precious little to help them choose between all of this, and I hope my offering will be very useful here.

In fact, the subtitle of the book is ‘navigation through the maze of advice for the self-coached climber’.

More on this shortly. In the meantime, it’s a day off for me...

New stuff in the shop

Some news from our webshop:

Echo Wall has been out a year now, so we’ve dropped it to half price. We’ll be selling the rest of our stock of the DVD at £10.

Mountain Equipment hats - Loads of you emailed over the past year to ask where you could get the ME hats that are never off my head when climbing. So after a bit of persuasion with ME, we’ve got some in red, black, yellow and various blues at £15.

Arriving hopefully any day is our stock of the new Welsh Connections DVD. I’m looking forward to seeing this myself, especially Mr  Robins on Liquid Ambar but also all the rest of the trad and bouldering madness from the best of the Welsh scene (Dawes, Davies, McHaffie etc..). We are taking pre-orders for it now at £15.

The other week we changed our postage charges to free for orders over £30. A bit later on we twigged it would be kind of handy if the various things we sell for £14.95 or thereabouts were actually a nice £15 for obvious reasons. So for example, now £30 gets you Welsh Connections and an ME hat or T-shirt and free postage to anywhere on earth. More sensible.

Crippled by language

G.P. Doctor Crippen, a Guardian columnist, makes some good points about how language can be used to define people by their illnesses in yesterday's G2 section. In his column he points out that adjectives used to describe medical conditions (e.g. "schizophrenic") can be problematic when applied as nouns to the people who have these conditions (e.g. "he is a schizophrenic").

He points out:

the thoughtless use of words may indicate an underlying iceberg of prejudice and
misunderstanding. I was taken to task a few days ago by a psychiatrist colleague
for using the word "schizophrenic" as a noun. "It is not a noun, and
schizophrenics are people," he said. Technically the psychiatrist is wrong. Like
"diabetic" and "asthmatic", schizophrenic was always meant to be an adjective,
but common usage has made it a noun.

It's the same with other adjectives as nouns too. We've discussed in class how people feel about adjectives used to label ethnic and other social groups (the blacks, the Asians, the disabled) and this seems to be part of the same issue. So, now we know that David Beckham has asthma, is he an asthmatic (noun)? Or should we say David Beckham is asthmatic (adjective)? Or perhaps, an excellent footballer and fashion icon who happens to excel despite his asthma?

Swim Team Starts Strong

Both the Men's and Women's Swim Team began the season strong last week in a four team meet in the new aquatic center at Smithfield-Selma High School.

Both teams finished first in their respective meets and will be back in action following the Thanksgiving break.

Congratulations to the Swim Team for a great start!

Acting like a bardboy

This article in today's Evening Standard tells us about a new version of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar which is being performed by a cast of young actors in London. Not exactly much news there you might think, but what's piqued the interest of the Standard is the fact that part of the script adapts the words of the bard (Shakespeare to you and me) and renders them in "street slang". Oh and the play is being rebranded as the "ultimate knife crime". D'ya get me?

Cue righteous indignation from some Evening Standard readers and probably a couple of letters in tomorrow's edition.

Frozen Custard is the perfect after game snack!

Season Ends for Varsity Football

WEB CAST.

The 2009 season ended in the same place that it started for the Garner Trojans on Friday night as they lost to Wake Forest-Rolesville 42-8 at Heritage High School. It didn't take the Cougars long to put a gap between the two teams as Trea Jones went 55 yards on third and two and it was 6-0 WFR as the PAT was no good.

On the ensuing kickoff, Garner fumbled the football and WFR recovered at the 12 yard line and three plays later the Cougars were up 14-0 after converting a 2 point try. Garner's offense finally got on the field and marched down the field however, the drive stalled and Garner had to settle for a 32 yard field goal try from Connor Torruella however, the field goal was blocked and Garner was still down 14.

Wake Forest got the ball back and the Trojan defense came up big forcing a Cougar punt from their own end zone. The snap on the punt went over the head of Will Braddy and out of the end zone for a safety and it was 14-2 WFR. The Cougars would score another first half TD and heading to the locker room, Garner was down 21-2.

The third quarter was more of a field position game for both teams as Wake Forest scored only one touchdown in the third period. However, Garner had to rely on junior quarterback, Cyle Nicely, after freshman quarterback, Lemond Johnson, went out to a injury.

Nicely would direct the Garner offense down the field and just when it looked like the Trojan drive would stall near the goal line, Garner got a roughing the passer call to extend the drive and keep it alive inside the WFR 5 yard line. Two plays later, Juwan Moye, capped the drive with the loan Garner touchdown of the night and it was 35-8 in favor of WFR.

On the Cougars next drive the Garner defense held until 4th down when the Cougars on fourth down and four fired a 35 yard touchdown pass and with the extra point, WFR had a 42-8 lead.

Both teams just ran out the clock to end the game and end the Trojans season with at 42-8 loss. Garner finished the 2009 season with a 7-6 record and will look forward to the 2010 season. The Trojans would also like to say thank you to the class of 2009 for all of their hard work and dedication.

***The Trojan Sports Network would like to thank WFR AD Don Murry for allowing the broadcast to take place tonight***

Trojans Drop First Game of the Year

The Varsity Basketball team hit the road on Tuesday night as they opened the season at Terry Sanford. Many picked the Bulldogs to be a contender in the 4A East and they showed why on Tuesday as they defeated Garner 67-42.

Garner is 0-1 and will return to action next week when they welcome Terry Sanford to Garner.

The Varsity girls picked up their first win defeating Terry Sanford. The Lady Trojans will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Athens Drive for a 6:00 tip off.

Txtrage

The Daily Mail is angry and this time it's not immigrants, youth gangs or single mothers who are to blame, but the evil empire that is the exam board AQA and its decision to put text messaging on the curriculum. Have a look at this article to get an idea of what it's all about. But also have a read of some of these really sensible and funny comments from readers (possibly not your average Daily Mail readers, but those who've followed Twitter feeds and email links to it, I would guess). Have a look at Chris's comment below and then the excellent response from luvu2h8me:

Well, Your "language skills" will not score with me or my customers, that's for sure... After all, I'm one of those old buzzards that knows nothing and should shut up, just accepting the blazing communication skills of yours, take you on, and happily accept that the very same skill of yours will put us both out of a job sooner rather than later, as long as you get your great pay for your extraordinary language knowledge and communication skills.
Realize that your txtspk skills has no real worth.
- Chris, Ayr, Scotland, 16/11/2009 13:43

1. Why did you capitalise "Your" in your first sentence?
2. Why did you spell "realise" as "realize"?
3. Why did you have a run-on sentence instead of punctuating it correctly?
4. Why did you say "your txtspk skills has no" instead of "your txtspk skills HAVE no". Didn't you realise that you were referring to a plural when you typed "skills"?

I'd advise you to keep away from txtspk until you master English correctly! ;)

My own board report

Many of you have emailed or commented asking me to talk a bit more about my board and  the structure of my sessions. The details are a bit intense for some readers here, so I’ve posted a fuller version of this post on my training blog for those interested. The short version is that I have been using it most evenings after work and I’ve made really good strength gains in the past 5 months or so. I’ve also been almost constant on the edge of getting injured - climbing in there is pretty damn intense. I’m used to training for several hours at a climbing wall, so I’m conditioned to keep going. But 1 hour on my board equals about 2 in a climbing wall and 4 outdoors. I just completed a couple of projects on it I’d been trying for about 4 months which are in the wee youtube above.

It’s really kept me going since I’ve been writing the book. Btw progress with that is going great guns with 12 hours a day working on it. Right now it’s mid way through being edited. I’ll keep you posted how it goes...

Creag dubh on the Cobbler in '78

Paul Cunningham points me at another new youtube of John Cunningham and Creag Dubh club friends rock climbing in pretty wintery conditions on the Cobbler in 1978. What really struck me watching this was how dramatically rock climbing in Scotland was about to move on in terms of attitude, tactics and standard shortly after this. Just one year after this on the same cliff Dave Cuthbertson was making a massive step forward in standard with Wild Country at hard E6 6b (sparsely protected F7b or 7b+). This video really shows an end of an era of an approach to climbing, and the start of a completely different one.

Garner Downs Wakefield to Advance to Round 2

WEBCAST.

Round one of the playoffs began on Friday night at a very soggy Trojan Stadium on Friday night as Garner welcomed Wakefield to town for the third all-time meeting between the two schools.

After playing the field position game early in the games first quarter, Wakefield jumped on the board first as Niklas Sade nailed a 23 yard field goal to give the Wolverines at 3-0 lead.

Garner struck for the first touchdown of the game on their first drive of the second quarter as Demetrius Fairley scored from 29 yards out to give Garner a 7-3, which would be the halftime score.

Wakefield was the first team to find the end zone in the second half as Freshman quarterback, Connor Mitch found Alex Starnes for a touchdown and a 10-7 lead for the Wolverines. It was Wakefield scoring again at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Mitch found Nigel King who tip toed the sideline for the touchdown and a 10 point Wakefield lead at 17-7 with just over 10:43 to go in the game.

But, Garner came right back with some big runs, none bigger than a run on fourth and one. That's when Garner's spectacular sophomore, Juwan Moye, broke tackle after tackle and rumbled 56 yards down to the five yard line where two plays later, quarterback Lemond Johnson found Dwight Darity at the one yard line, Darity then dove into the end zone for the score and cut the Wakefield lead to three at 17-14 with over 8 minutes to play.

Wakefield came right back and it looked like Garner would hold the Wolverines to a three and out, however, a 15 yard roughing the kicker penalty kept the drive alive, but Garner's defense again came up big again and forced a punt.

Garner got the ball back down three with 6:02 to play Garner would move the ball down the field and again it was Juwan Moye who had another big run to keep the drive alive and get down to the three yard line where the super sophomore, Demetrius Fairley punched it in and gave the Trojans a 21-17 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Wakefield fumbled the kick-off and Terrance Fussell picked up the loose ball and rumbled down to the 19 yard line, however, Garner would go three and out and give the ball right back to Wakefield.

The Wolverines would move the ball in the wrong direction and on a third down and 15 Connor Mitch fired a pass down field that was intercepted by Bryan Watkins for his second pick of the night to seal the win for Garner.

Garner is now 8-2 in the first round of the playoffs under Head Coach Nelson Smith and the Trojans lead the all-time series with Wakefield two games to one.

With the win, the Trojans are on to round two of the state playoffs for the second straight year and they will travel to Wake Forest-Rolesville next Friday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be play at Heritage High School next week.

Why do we talk?

There was a really good documentary about children's language development on BBC2's Horizon programme last night, called Why Do We Talk? Have a look here on BBC's i-player this week to watch it. And the BBC magazine has an article about it here.

And there's more on Deb Roy's massive child language data experiment here on a blog post back in July of this year. Meanwhile, have a look at this TED online lecture by the mighty Steven Pinker for his view on "the blank slate". But first, make yourself a nice cup of tea and put on your thinking cap (rather than your dodgy New Era hat).

Last night, seemingly out of the blue, I felt stronger in training than I ever have. The reason, in hindsight is obvious. I’d just been doing one/two sessions 5 days a week for about three weeks, and my body was shredded. An enforced couple of days off due to appointments around Scotland last weekend barely even seemed enough to feel normal again. It sounds like nothing, but three weeks is a long time to feel no improvement, or negative progress, when you are giving it full pelt every single night until your upper body can’t face another move in the wee small hours.

We are totally hardwired not to think of the long term in this respect. It takes a bit of faith that it’s working. If I’d got too frustrated (which I nearly did) and taken some rest to ‘cash in’ too early, I would have sabotaged the kickstart for the body.

Last night, two boulder problems went down that I’d been trying for four months. They felt easy. Like nothing. Last week I spent a whole hour (a long time on a board V-hard with 60 second rests between tries) just trying to do each move.

I nearly saw of the hardest project I’ve set so far, got to the last move of seven and swung my legs about wildly in confusion, eyes practically drilling a hole in the board searching for the crucial foot hold. Except I’d taken it off the board and forgotten. Idiot. The next ten attempts to move No. 5 were fair punishment.

Progression is here

Just a note to say the Progression DVD stock arrived with us this morning and is in the webshop now. Sharma’s first ascent of Jumbo Love 9b in the states, Adam Ondra making 9a+s look like nothing, the young americans destroying the hard grit classics, Patxi Usobiaga showing you what training really means. Tommy Caldwell trying to take big wall climbing to a new level of difficulty (again) and all the rest of the jaw dropping bouldering we expect from a Big Up film. You can get it here

I’ll be finishing writing early today for my appointment with the DVD player before training this evening. The board better be ready. I’m expecting this film to get me very psyched!

Garner Falls at Harnett Central

Web Cast.

Harnett Central took their opening drive of the game in for a touchdown and never looked back as they downed Garner 34-9 in the regular season finale at Harnett Central's Trojan Stadium on Friday night.

Garner would be unable to mount any offense against the Trojan defense as Harnett Central was up 20-0 at halftime. In the second half, the Garner offense put several drives together but had nothing to show for it until late in the third quarter when Connor Torruella hit a field goal to make it 34-3.

The loan Trojan touchdown came late in the third quarter when Jeremiah Davis rumbled 77 yards, but the PAT was blocked and Harnett Central milked the clock for a 35-9 win.

Garner will now await the release of the NCHSAA Football Playoff Brackets late on Saturday night to see where they will be playing next Friday night.

***The Trojan Sports Network team would like to extend a Thank you to Harnett Central AD Will Gage and his staff for providing press box space for tonight's broadcast***

Hoodwinked

Hoodies, thugs, yobs, feral youths, louts and scum. That's what many readers of this blog are, if you subscribe to the popular view that all young people (particularly if they're from the inner city and/or black and/or working class) are unruly troublemakers.

Jane Graham writing in today's Guardian, in a piece mainly about the new Michael Caine film, Harry Brown*, points out that the hooded youth or "hoodie" has now become a kind of visual or linguistic shorthand for a new kind of folk devil, a new bogeyman for the twenty first century. As Graham points out, hoodies are "defined by their class (perceived as being bottom of the heap) and their social standing (their relationship to society is always seen as being oppositional). Hoodies aren't "kids" or "youngsters" or even "rebels" – in fact, recent research by Women in Journalism on regional and national newspaper reporting of hoodies shows that the word is most commonly interchanged with (in order of popularity) "yob", "thug", "lout" and "scum"".

And the research by Women in Journalism referred to above makes for some fascinating reading. The headline statistics that they use in the report "Hoodies or Altar Boys?" are as follows:

* 85% of teen boys said newspapers portray them in a bad light
* Reality TV was seen as portraying teen boys most fairly
* Media stories about yobs and hoodies are the main reason why teen
boys are wary of other teenagers
* 80% of teen boys think adults are more wary of them now than they were a year ago.
* Terms used in newspaper stories about teen boys included thugs, yobs, hoodies, feral, evil, lout, monsters, brutes, scum, menace, heartless, sick, menacing and inhuman
* Over the past year, there were more newspaper stories about teens and crime (as victims or offenders) than about teens and all other subjects put together

* Even on subjects other than crime, few newspaper stories show teen boys in a good light: only 24% of stories about teens and sport were positive about teenage boys; only 16% of stories about teens and entertainment were positive.
Fiona Bawdon, the WiJ committee member who will be presenting the research, says: “When a photo of a group of perfectly ordinary lads standing around wearing hooded tops has become visual shorthand for urban menace, or even the breakdown of society, it's clear that teenage boys have a serious image problem. The teen boys' "brand" has become toxic. Media coverage of boys is unrelentingly negative, focusing almost entirely on them as victims or perpetrators of crime - and our research shows that the media is helping make teenage boys fearful of each other.”

So, as students of English Language, particularly if you're doing ENGA2 work on the representation of young people, this is fertile ground to investigate. The links on the Women in Journalism site are really helpful too, as they point us towards some particularly relevant articles such as Suzanne Moore's thoughtful piece in The Daily Mail here and The Labour MP David Lammy's excellent comment column here.

And just to remind you of how very similar students to yourselves are referred to in the national press and by members of the public, why not have a read of this appalling tripe from the Daily Mail and some of the deranged comments of its readers on a recent unpleasant incident linked to Orpington College, a "scum magnet" according to an equally unpleasant article in The Sun.

Children's melodies

Recent German research into children's early exposure to sounds seems to suggest that newborn babies have noticeably different cries, with distinct intonation patterns linked to the sounds of their mothers' language. What is even more striking is that these patterns seem to become established before the child is even born:

The dramatic finding of this study is that not only are human neonates capable of producing different cry melodies, but they prefer to produce those melody patterns that are typical for the ambient language they have heard during their fetal life, within the last trimester of gestation.

So in other words (and helped by a news piece on Radio 4 this morning that I'll try to link here later) a French baby's cries will be closer to the melodic patterns of the French language, while a German baby's will be closer to the intonation patterns of the German language, and these intonation patterns will have been developed while in the womb. The audio can be heard by going to this link on Billy Clark's London Language blog.

More on this story here. But in this report on the same story, some interesting reasons are suggested for not jumping to conclusions about what this experiment proves or disproves:

More work remains to be done to confirm that parental talk affects how babies cry, remarks psycholinguist D. Kimbrough Oller of the University of Memphis. Newborns cry differently depending on their emotional states, which may have differed for French and German babies, Oller says. Mothers of one nationality may have allowed babies to cry longer before picking them up. Or, recording devices may have been set up more intrusively in one country than in the other. Either situation would complicate an acoustic comparison of French and German newborns’ cries, Oller notes.A related scientific debate concerns whether parents’ native language influences how babies babble during the first year of life. Oller regards babies’ babbling as a universal set of sounds largely immune to cultural or linguistic influences.

East Garner Wins Garner Bowl

Web Cast.

East Garner scored on their first play from scrimmage and never looked back as the Trojans defeated the North Garner Trojans 36-26. The two teams played a back and forth contest the entire first half, but East Garner got help from its defense and special teams.

East Garner retunred a kick 80 yards for a touchdown and a interception 66 yards also for a touchdown. Congrats to both teams on a great game and a great season.

Thank you Lee and Anna Hudson

Learning to write big things

Right now I am writing a book. So far it’s been a fascinating learning curve for a novice book writer. I have written one book, which I give away for free (here), but I cheated and wrote that on the bus from Fort William to Arrochar and didn’t put any pressure on myself to see it as a book until it was finished. I’ve also written about a third of an ebook about weight optimisation (sounds better than control) for climbers on my phone. I might try and finish it on my phone just for the novelty!

But this time round I’m putting a bit of pressure on myself, not just to finish it, but finish it quickly. I’m about a week away if I was locked away in a room without distractions. But unfortunately my computer serves me up distractions constantly. At least the Scottish autumn doesn’t serve too many good weather distractions. And one hour on my board equals four on the crag.

In school I felt sick at the thought of 2000 word essays. Project climbing taught me how to ride the wave of those random days when inspiration and energy coincide and make a jump of progress. It also taught me that even the bad days when everything felt ten times harder than it should resulted in valuable progress, but you only realise it in hindsight. So I’m lucky that my background has given me a lot of advantages for getting it done.

Both my blogs got me past that awful feeling of sitting down to write and staring at a blank page for two hours. The medium tends to teach you how to just say what you need to say. My emerging book is turning out like that, which I like. It’s also arranged a bit like my blog - point by point and easier to digest than a massive chapter. Easier to write too, so it should be with you soon.

Thanks to everyone who’s asked about it - I’ll talk about it plenty as soon as I’m done writing. For now I can tell you it’s called ‘9 out of 10 climbers make the same mistakes’. It’s a book about improving at climbing, but it does what all the others don’t. The books out there at the moment lay out all the possible ways and exercises to improve in front of you. They are the map. But nearly everyone gets lost and strays off the path. So my book is the compass - it shows you how to navigate through the sea of possible improvement activities and how to decide which ones you need to focus on, and which are the big priorities to keep in front of the smaller ones.

Talking of training for climbing books - The best thats out there right now is still The Self Coached Climber. I reviewed it ages ago on my other blog. But I realised it was crazy I wasn’t selling it myself, especially because you’d get my free book How to climb hard trad with it which is obviously compliments it quite nicely. So I am now, here.
