Garner Downs Holly Springs

WEB CAST.

Coming into play Thursday night, Holly Springs was talked about as one of the best teams in the area, but tonight at Trojan Park, Garner was the better of the two squads as they defeated Holly Springs 4-2.

Jacob Baker got the ball for the Trojans and in five innings of work, pitched outstanding allowing just one run while scattering four hits and striking out nine. However, in the game of baseball, you have to score to win and Garner was the first team to do that in the bottom of the second.

After a lead off walk to Colin Perry there was one out as Brett Walters popped up a bunt attempt, but was helped out by his teammate Connor Torruella who was hit by the Justin Manning pitch to put two runners on with two outs. That brought Jared Newbry to the plate and on the first pitch he saw, Newbry laced a single to left field for his first RBI of the season and Garner had a 1-0 lead.

Following the Newbry single, Jesse Fisher drove home his third run of the season when he singled to left to score Torruella and give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.

Garner's lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth when with one out, it was the fantastic Freshman, Jared Newbry who singled to left and scored three batters later on CJ Schmitt's RBI single.

But, give the Golden Hawks some credit as they never went away and after getting a run in the fifth inning to make it 3-1, the Hawks put another run in the sixth.

In the games sixth frame, AJ Sconzo singled with one out then Mike Roach sent a ground ball to short that went under the glove of Jared Newbry to put two one with one out. With the error allowing the inning to continue, Donald Hedgepeth was hit by a Matt Powell pitch and drove home the final Holly Springs run of the game.

Garner added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single from Aquail Sanders. That would be more than enough for Jackson Pleasant who pitched the final inning and 2/3 to get the first Garner save of the year.

The Trojans (2-9) will be back in action on Friday afternoon as they travel to Western Harnett High School to take on Lee Co. with first pitch slated for 4:00.

Finding focus for the Spring

It’s taking some time to find my feet and point myself in the right direction for spring activities. The constant activity as usual is trying to simplify and edit the list of things to do before it induces paralysis once again.
Looking forward to a spring of uninterrupted climbing, writing and doing some work on my house.
Today the sun is out, so after I have the new stuff uploaded to the shop. I’ll officially start the outdoor rock climbing season with a trip to the Arisaig cave. Tomorrow, it’ll cease again with the arrival once again of the blizzards…
[Update - Good links on a long (30 move) project in the cave, maybe Font 8a+. Watched the cold front and snow gradually envelop the mountains of Ardnamurchan as the afternoon wore on. Seems Scotland is in for a pounding of snow over the next 48 hours. Cool!]
Tom has posted up an interview with me about climbing Anubis on Scottishclimbs.com here. Thanks to Blair and Tony for the questions.

More new arrivals in the shop

Four more new arrivals in our shop today:
First off is Ron Fawcett’s story of his life of climbing. One of the first true ‘rock athletes’. Ron was one of the first climbers to embrace modern athleticism in climbing. He was one of the first to understand the enjoyment of sport climbing, and harness it as a tool to make a game changing leap forward in trad climbing standard. Needless to say the legacy of his climbs are still slapping the strong and bold of today - Careless Torque (Highball Font 8a), Toy Boy (E7 7a) and Master’s Edge (E7 6b) to give a few examples. A classic example of the quiet, unassuming brilliant athlete.
Trad climbing plus is a comprehensive full colour manual on how to do everything trad climbing demands of you - from tying in to psychological control. An accessible style of writing and nice full colour pics on just about every page of the techniques in action will mean you can use this either as a one stop course from beginner to expert, or an instant reference for a technique you suddenly realised you need for tomorrow’s climb.
Up European climbing report - This year’s report of everything important that happened in climbing in 2009. There are always great interviews in Up as well and this year was no different. The highlight was an extensive interview with Johnny Dawes with lots of interesting pics, old and new I hadn’t seen before.
Performance Rock Climbing - the original climber’s training bible from the early nineties. It was so good it’s still mega popular today and only in the past couple of years has been matched and complimented by a couple of good modern titles (also in my shop!) I bought it when I was sixteen and went from F6c+ to F7c+ in the following 12 months. I read it so many times my copy looks like it’s been chewed up by a pit bull.

They are all in the shop here.

Exam revision - getting started on Language Variation

So, yesterday we looked at Language Change and some suggestions for links to look at and articles to read, and today we'll have a quick look at Language Variation. It's worth remembering that this is more than just accent and dialect (although they are a major part of this topic) and that gender, sexuality, age, workplace and communities of practice can also come into this, along with global English.

A good starting point is the BBC Voices website, which has some excellent resources on regional variation. The British Library has various archives and learning resources available online too, so have a listen to the Archival Sound Recordings here and a read of the Sounds Familiar material here.

For gender and variation, these notes on Teachit, written by the late Andrew Moore, are really helpful. Concentrate on the sections from Lakoff to Cameron for this exam. The best way to do well on a gender variation question is to read Deborah Cameron's Myth of Mars and Venus, but if you can't be arsed (that's CBA to you, you babylon yoot) then you can find good summaries and extracts from this link.

More soon...

Interaction satisfaction

Here's another way of using timelines to help you with the topic of Language Change. Ant Heald, who teaches English at McAuley Catholic High School, Doncaster, has got some of his students to create their own timeline and you can add key dates too, or contribute to the content of existing dates if you want to. To join, just go to the link above and sign up for an account, click on become an editor. You'll get a reply from Ant at some point and will then be able to add content.

Exam revision - getting started

It's getting near that time again, with exams looming ever closer. If you are starting to think about revising for your exams then here are some pointers as to where you can look and what you can do. This post is designed for A2 students and there'll be one for AS students to follow soon.

ENGA3 consists of three parts: Language Change, Language Variation and Language Discourses. Your paper is 2 hours and 30 minutes long, which is nice. You get a choice of question 1 or 2 (Qu 1 is on Language Change and Qu 2. is on Language Variation) and then just one question 3 which you have to do. The first bit of advice is don't just revise either Change or Variation. Because you don't get any choice with question 3, it's a very good idea to make sure you're rock solid on both Change and Variation, so that you're ready to answer a language Discourses question on whatever crops up, be it debates around Political Correctness (change), male female talk (variation) or attitudes to accent (variation).

The next bit of advice is to think about the different types of question you'll get. Language Change questions may have a focus on older texts, in which case you'll be asked to analyse them for what the writers are saying, how they are saying it and how the language of each text represents the time period it's from. So to revise this, try looking at plenty of older texts from different genres. Go to the British Library texts in context site and browse through texts from Early Modern English onwards. Mug up on your language frameworks too,  by checking Beth Kemp's A level site. Don't forget to use the emag site (with your SFX log in that can be obtained from the LRC) and Kerboodle (log ins are on Moodle).

Another type of Change question could presentyou with new words, or old words with new meanings, and use these to stimulate discussion about how and why language changes and where new words come from and how they are formed. There's masses of stuff out there about new words and you should have a look at the MacMillan Dictionaries Buzzword pages for lots of good examples of new words. Also, try this link to a page full of old blog posts about new words. Don't forget that you may also be presented with numerical data, perhaps in the form of charts and graphs showing you how frequently a word might have appeared over time and in different places. Make sure you mug up on wave theory and other processes of language change from your A2 textbook.

Next time, we'll look at ENGA3 Language Variation and then at Discourses. If you have any questions, please post them as comments and I'll try to answer them.

Varsity Baseball Drops Tough One at Home

WEB CAST.

Following their win over Southeast Raleigh on Tuesday, the Trojans were back at home against East Wake and looking to build some momentum heading into spring break next week. Garner sent Jacob Baker to the hill and for the first four innings, Baker pitched outstanding. But, it just wasn't meant to be as Garner fell to East Wake 3-1

The game was scoreless through three innings as both pitchers went toe for toe and neither backed down. In the top of the fourth, Baker got the first out, but an error and walk to consecutive batters put Garner in a tough spot. With two outs, East Wake's Wes Luck drilled a single back up the middle to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

When the fifth inning began, Baker was lifted in favor of Hunter Brown who came in and pitched well for the Trojans, but after hitting a East Wake batter to begin the inning, Nate Lusk came to plate and hammered a 3-1 pitch to deep left center field for a two run home run and East Wake had a 3-0 lead. That was the only mistake Brown made on the night, and when he left the game, Garner still trailed by just three.

The Trojans had their chances to score in the fifth and sixth, but just could not seem to get that timely hit.

Still trailing in the bottom of the seventh, the Trojan began to mount a rally as CJ Schmitt walked to begin the inning and after two near home runs from both Matt Powell and Brett Walters, the Trojans were down to their final out.

Colin Perry came in to pinch hit and delivered a single to left center field which plated Schmitt for the first Trojan run of the game. Jared Newbry was next to hit for the Trojans and worked the count to 3-2 before grounding out to end the game and give East Wake a 3-1 win.

Garner will take a couple of days off before returning to action next Thursday at home at 7:00 when they host Holly Springs.

----------------

The JV Baseball team picked up a big home win on Thursday afternoon as they continued their hot play, the Trojans were in control the entire game before picking up a 7-0 forfeit win when the game was stopped in the fifth inning.

----------

Varsity Softball continued to roll on Thursday as Garner took an early lead and never looked back as they defeated East Wake 5-0 at Trojan Field.

The undefeated Lady Trojans will be back in action following Spring Break.

Lady Trojan Soccer Downs East Wake

The Lady Trojans Soccer team returned home to Trojan Stadium tonight as they hosted the East Wake Warriors and picked up a win heading into Spring Break as they Lady Trojans picked up a 4-1 overtime win.

Amber Eberhard scored Garner's first goal in the opening half and the Lady Trojans maintained the 1-0 lead until the five minute mark of the game when East wake scored to tie the game.

The late goal by the Warriors led to overtime, but, that's where Garner dominated. The first overtime goal was nailed home by Ashley Ford with an assist from Michelle Roth. That would be all the scoring in the first half of the overtime but in the second overtime period, Garner put a cap to the game as Ashley Ford scored again this time with help from Brittany Lambert and finally to cap the scoring, Amber Eberhard scored off an assist from Gabi Dugal, and Garner went on to the 4-1 win.

Little island life

Man, it’s always nice to come home. We are just back from a wee trip visiting Claire’s brother in Bermuda. Being a miniscule island waaay out in the atlantic and fairly isolated it’s a quirky place! We’ve visited before, but this time it left more of an impression. I think last time it was too hot for a Scots brain to function and I walked about like a sunburnt zombie most of the time.
This time it was cooler and some reasonably brisk physical activity was possible without body meltdown. The above wee video shows a couple of problems I found in these old smugglers caves. The first one seemed pretty tricky but it went easier than expected (V10) when I caught it in ok conditions.
Like many small islands I’ve been to it’s culture has many faces. Many good, some not. On the surface there’s the brightly painted houses, pictures of the Queen and everyone saying “Good afternoon” to each other. But then you go for a morning run and barely a single car moves out for you, leaving joggers in a gauntlet between the narrow walled roadsides and the cars whistling past your toes. I gained a new appreciation for both how much I love the open spaces I’m lucky to have access to, and how much of a privilege they are! Bermuda seems to be going through the same struggles many wee communities go through - for the balance of positive and negative forces to keep leaning positive while adapting to the rest of the world changing around it.
After some sun, some social, some book research time and a battery ‘reset’, there is much to be done at home…
Some more pics/video of Bermuda bloc, sport and DWS here

New shop stuff

If you ordered from the shop while we were away - Thanks for being patient! Normal dispatches will be resumed in the morning.
We’ve just added some new shop products:
Robin Smith’s story
Many of you will have read on this blog recently that we repeated the legendary week of new ice climbs on Ben Nevis by Robin Smith and Jimmy Marshall in 1960. The stories of both men’s climbing inspired so many of us Scots climbers when we were first discovering the Scottish mountains for ourselves. We realised it was crazy that we didn’t have Smith’s biography in the shop. I’m not totally sure if his untimely death in an avalanche at 23 makes the story of his life even more powerful, or if it’s just his sheer talent on the rock and ice, combined with his personality in his writings and other deeds that make this so important. Obviously, Smith is always going to be a hero for Scot’s climbers. No doubt this book will find him some more admirers who might otherwise not have come across his story.

The Rock Warriors Way
Arno’s first book on mental skills development for climbers was the first of it’s kind and has obviously been a well thumbed reference before many a soul searching lead, including my own. Having made contributions to Arno’s second title - Espresso Lessons, we obviously were primed to bring that to you as soon as it came out a few months ago. And it seems you’ve been loving it!  Again, we realised that a lot of you won’t have read the more comprehensive original text from the Warriors Way. So we have that available now too.
Last up due to popular demand we have Jerry Moffat’s story of his career - Revelations - back in stock again. This time in the new paperback format at £12.99.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality is just one new expression covered in detail on Kerry Maxwell's Buzzwords page on the MacMillan Dictionaries site. It's a really excellent resource for Language Change at A level and has a very handy subject index which can show you the fields from where many of the new words have been derived: technology, business, health and leisure being particularly big areas of lexical innovation.

The Buzzwords archive is also very handy for looking at new words and phrases over the last few months, so have a look here for more. And remember, your examiners are human (at least for the time being) and like to see new examples of word formation rather than the same 10 examples from your text books and revision guides (apart from the brilliant examples in the fantastic Nelson Thornes book - ahem).

Kerry's powerpoint on new words, from her presentation to teachers at SFX in June 2008 is still available here if you're looking for some good revision material.

Trojans Sweep Southeast in Varsity Baseball & Softball

BASEBALL WEB CAST.

SOFTBALL WEB CAST.

The day began with one mission for the Trojan Sports Network and that was to bring fans both the Varsity Baseball and Softball games and that mission is now complete and marked as a success as Garner swept Southeast Raleigh, winning in both games at the Garner Sports Complex.

First thing on the schedule Tuesday was Trojan Baseball as Garner went into the game really needing a win, and Garner was able to "get healthy" against Southeast thanks to some timely hitting and outstanding pitching.

Things began for Garner in the bottom of the first as Alec Hulmes walked then advanced to second and third on a pair of pass balls and later came in to score on a RBI single from Matt Powell also on the play, there was an error in center allowing CJ Schmitt to score and it was 2-0 Garner after one.

The Trojans scored again in the second, this time with two outs, Jesse Fisher singled and again, Hulmes walked as the back to back singles from Hunter Brown and CJ Schmitt, Garner scored again and it was 4-0.

It remained 4-0 until the fourth inning when on the very first pitch of the inning, Jesse Fisher took the Kevin Tangerlini pitch over the left field wall just inside the fair pole down the line for a line drive home run! Two batters later, CJ Schmitt sent a towering fly ball to left center field for his third home run of the year and it was 6-0 Garner.

The Trojan added two insurance runs in the fifth to take a 8-0 lead. But, while the offense was doing its part, starting pitcher, Jackson Pleasant was also holding up his end of the bargain and he dominated the Bulldog hitters holding Southeast to just five in in six innings of work.

But, the biggest stat of the night for Pleasant was that he did not give up a walk and struck out six. Following the outstanding effort by Pleasant, Matt Powell came in and continued the work striking out six to preserve the shut out as Garner went on to win 8-0.

The Trojans will be back at home on Thursday night when they host East Wake at 7:00, the JV game will begin at 4:00

---------------------------

Following the baseball game, it was time for a quick change of venues as Garner Softball was next on the docket as the Lady Trojans put their undefeated record on the line as they hosted Southeast Raleigh at Trojan Field and promptly disposed of the Bulldogs 12-2.

But, it wasn't all fun and games early as Southeast put up a pair of runs in the first as they strung together three base hits and stole two bases in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. However, that lead did not last long as Garner came right back in their half of the first.

Mary-Scott Powell led off the bottom of the first with a double off the center field wall, she later stole third as Raven Smith walked. With runners at second and third and two outs, Freshman, Maddy Stewart came to the plate and laced a single to left center to plate Powell on the play Southeast threw the ball around the yard a bit allowing Smith to score as well and tie the game at two.

That would be the closest the game would be as Southeast did not score again, but Garner sure did. In the bottom of the second Garner loaded the bases with two outs as Ashley Carroll strolled to the plate, facing a one ball two strike count, Carroll fouled off a good two strike pitch before sending a shot to way back left field and clearing the fence for a GRAND SLAM HOME RUN!

Kasey Hamrick followed Carroll with a double off the wall in left center, she scored on the next pitch as Southeast committed another error and after two it was 7-2 Garner.

The Lady Trojans scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth with the big hit of the inning coming again, from Ashely Carroll who laced another hard hit ball, this time to left field to pate two and really put the game out of reach at 11-2.

Garner put the game away in the bottom of the sixth when Kasey Hamrick came in to score and give the Lady Trojans a 12-2 win in six innings. With the win Garner is now 6-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference play.

They will be back in action on Thursday night when they host East Wake at 7:00, the JV game will begin at 5:00.

Audio and video clips

The BBC website has got some good material archived, including clips of audio and video about language. Here are some that might help:

The Essex accent is dying out - Radio 4 feature about accent change
Changing East London accents

More teen slang

The BBC News School Report project included some interesting and funny clips of teen slang from around the British Isles. This one's excellent: just wait for the "proper English" translation at the end - it proper craiced me up.
Say What?

The house/arse interface

Regional variation in English is something that many people celebrate: diversity and slightly different cultural nuances are healthy after all. Others find variation unsettling and long for uniformity. Luckily, Ian McMillan is in the former camp and he's written a piece for today's Guardian about the ways in which accent and dialect can be radically different over just a small distance.

One distinction he makes is the difference in pronunciation you can encounter of the word house, pronounced as it's spelt in some areas (with a sounded "h" and diphthong "ou") and pronounced "arse" just down the road. If you've ever read Jim Shelley's TV column in the Daily Mirror you'll probably be aware of the potential for humour of this house/arse interface when referring to Eastenders ("You're never comin' round my arse again!"), but McMillan's more interested in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire divide.

It's a good read and the comments posted online after it, show the divide between those who celebrate diversity and variation and those who lament it. Just take a look at George Ball's nasty dig about regional accent for an idea about how discussions about accent quickly turn into something much more personal.

Have a look too at this November 2009 BBC Magazine story about Collins Dictionary's attempts to trace the meanings and usage of old dialect terms, if you want to see a bit more about where some terms are derived from and how they developed.

Orientation

Dear Granpa and Grandma,

Yesterday at my school we had an International Day. We had performances, food stalls, displays, raffle ticket draw, and some of us were dressed in costumes.

Event 1

Event 2

Event 3

Event 4

Event 5

We started our day off with performances but the one I liked best was the one from fourth grade. We played games. The performance I was in was Lambada.

Straight after our performances we had our lunch. There were food stalls. They came from Australia, Asia, Arab, and Greece.

Everyone had a job. These people were from sixth grade. I did my job after I had lunch. My job was to sell Intenational Day Books.

We had displyas in the hall. These displays were good but I didn’t get to see them. They displays came from a lot of countries.

There were also a Trash and Treasure stall where they sold toys. The school got these things by asking the children to bring them in.

Resolution

Although I didn’t win anything, International Day was still fun.

Love from Sue

SSS No-Hits Garner

WEB CAST.

The Trojans were back in action on Friday as they played host to the Smithfield-Selma Spartans for their second conference match up of the year and from the opening pitch you knew it was going to be a special night at Trojan Park, but the only problem was, it was a special night for the Spartans as they blanked Garner 7-0.

Hunter Brown got the ball for Garner and pitched well enough to win, but the offense just didn't come through as Brown's counterpart, Tate Parrish, was untouchable on Friday night.

SSS started things off in the first with a lead off single by Dylan Brown and two batters later, Blake Mitchell grounded out to score Brown. The Trojans came up empty in the first and the second was more of the same as the Spartans got the lead off man on base and he later came around to score on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 SSS after two.

The third inning was the costly inning for the Trojans as Smithfield-Selma sent nine batters to the plate and five runs came across to score, but you can't lay it all on the Trojan pitching as the defense lost a couple of ball in the twilight sky allowing the inning to continue and allowing the Spartans to take a 7-0 lead.

That was more than enough for UNC signee Tate Parrish, the Spartan Senior was making just his second start of the year and on Friday showed why he is a UNC commit. The only blemish on the night for Parrish was a pair of walks to Connor Torruella. Other than the two walks, Parrish kept Garner off balance all night.

Garner could just not find any offense as they were no hit on Friday night and will look to get back on track on Tuesday when they host Southeast Raleigh at 4:00.

Scots: not slang but a dialect

A new initiative in Scotland to educate people in the history of the Scots dialect (or language if you're being nationalistic about it) is reported on in today's Herald. While Scots may seem a bit distant from south London, it's always good to look at  different varieties of English to build up a better understanding of the whole topic of Language Variation in ENGA3, plus many of the same issues crop up whatever variety you look at.

Is Scots just a broken, slang form of Standard English? No, and if you say that in Scotland you'll probably get a purple tin of Tenants Extra smacked in your face. Is it a dialect or a language? Well, that's trickier and it depends on what you define as a dialect. These questions and others are addressed on a new website from Learning and Teaching Scotland which looks at the history of Scots, attitudes to its use and examples of it being used. It's a very informative site and you can find it here.

Comet Errors Aid Garner in First Road Win

WEB CAST.

The Varsity softball team was playing their first road game of the season on Tuesday night as they traveled to Clayton High School for a make-up game with the Comets. The game was originally scheduled to be played last Friday, however, rain washed away the softball game and the game was replayed on Tuesday with Garner winning 8-4.

After a great start by both pitchers, Garner got on the board first in the second inning off a couple of Comet errors. Maddy Stewart was once again the catalyst for the Garner offense as she reached on a error by the Comet first basemen, that was followed by a error by the Comet third basemen and after a third error of the inning, Garner plated two runs and had a early 2-0 lead after two.

The Garner lead grew to five after the top of the fourth as with one out, Kasey Hamrick reached on the fourth Clayton error of the night, two batters later, Maddy Stewart walked to load the bases for Halie Warner who got a RBI the hard way as she was hit by the pitch and allowed a run to score. Christian Gower, the Garner pitcher, came to the plate and helped her own cause as she laced a two run single to left to make it 5-0 Garner.

Clayton came back with a couple of runs in the fourth and fifth to make it a 5-3 ball game, but then again in the seventh, Garner came right back and answered the call.

Kimmie Stewart reached base with one out in the seventh that was followed by a Ashley Carroll single and another miscue by the Comet outfield allowed Stewart to score. That started the chain of events rolling again for the Lady Trojans who plated two more runs in the top of the seventh on two more Comet errors and going to bottom of the last inning it was 8-3 Garner.

Clayton added a run in the seventh as they loaded the bases with just one out, and after a RBI single by the Comet catcher, Nella Chamble, the Trojan pitcher, Christian Gower settled down and got the next two hitters to retire the Comets and give Garner a 8-4 win.

Garner (3-0, 3-0) will be back in action on Friday night when they travel to SSS for a 7:00 first pitch. There will NOT be a JV game as SSS does not have a JV team.
