New in the shop - Hell and Back and the Scottish yearbook

A couple of new things in my shop this week. First off the BBC TV film To Hell and Back about my first ascent of the E10 on Cairngorm has finally been released on DVD by Triple Echo, after many requests. Some of you will have read about my preparation and eventual rather nerve wracking lead on this blog, but didn’t get a chance to see the film on Scottish TV. The climb is still the UK’s only E10 graded mountain rock climb and one of the most serious trad routes anywhere. In the film there’s a fair bit of me getting really quite scared, belayers reduced to tears and even the film crew saying on camera that they wouldn’t film something like it again. You can get a copy here. Enjoy.

Next up is Stone Country’s new annual book production the Scottish climbing yearbook. I’ve just read through it and feeling roundly inspired for next year’s climbing action. Congratulations to John Watson for a superb concept of a climbing book. The yearbook idea has been tried on a world scale, but doing it on home turf works much better - all the new crags in the book are places you can jump in the car and go to. All the climbers, crags and mountains pictured gloriously in full colour are ones you know, or soon might. This adds a new level of relevance, and hence inspiration. A great reminder of what we have in Scotland and what others are getting out and doing. Just what is needed as we start a new year of climbing. In it you’ll find news of highlight ascents sumer and winter, excellent large photos of places and climbing action and topos of new, established or rapidly developing crags that haven’t hit the guidebooks yet. It costs less that buying two issues of a climbing magazine but has more stuff that means something to you than a whole year of magazines. It’s here.

"I'll get da fiend to duppy her den"

Those are the words that led to two East Londoners getting sent down for lengthy prison sentences, and linguistics had a major part to play in getting them off the street and into a cell. An article in yesterday's Independent tells us more:

To give you the background: in December 2008, two months after the conversation above, the girl pregnant with Jolie's baby was lured by text to a spot close to the Regent's Canal in Islington, North London. There, Ogundele lay in wait to batter the girl over the head with an iron bar before throwing her in the waterway. Both the girl and the baby escaped alive, and the search turned to her assailant. After Ogundele and Jolie became prime suspects, their computers were seized. They had forgotten to delete their MSN history folders and police called in experts from the University of Aston's Centre for Forensic Linguistics. They helped decipher the boys' language, and the two rappers were sentenced for conspiracy to murder last month. Ogundele got 18 years in prison, Jolie, 14.

Forensic Linguistics is something we've looked at before (try here and here) and it's a fascinating area in which close study of people's language use can lead to the solving of some pretty unpleasant crimes. Last February, Krzysztof Kredens from the Centre for Forensic Linguistics did an excellent talk to SFX students about some of the cases in which forensic linguistics had been applied, and some of the techniques they have employed, and we're hoping to repeat this in the future. But in the meantime, the article itself is a good introduction to some of what they're up to. You can find out more about the work of the Centre for Forensic Linguistics here.

Promiscuous polysemy

There's a very good article on Language Log about how meaning change in language is a natural and positive thing. Using the word post as an example ("Fence posts, army posts, the New York Post, blog posts, ambassadorial posts, post offices..."), Geoff Pullum argues that the prescriptive point of view -  change is a bad thing that must be prevented or controlled at all costs - is cobblers, and that words change meanings all the time. As he says:

Human languages do not strive to avoid ambiguity. They do not try to align words with meanings one to one. They are not in danger of anarchy when a new word sense evolves. People don't just tolerate languages with multiply polysemous words, they seem to love them; people thrive on multiplicity of meaning. There are thousands of examples that show this. It is only the prescriptivist thickheads who cannot see what it means.

So, he argues, polysemy - multiple meanings of the same word - is not inherently confusing. One major argument used by prescriptivists against semantic change is that it leads to misunderstanding and confusion (How can sick mean good when it also means ill, or wicked mean excellent when it also means evil?) but Pullum's take on this is a strong counterblast to all of this.

Trojan Rally Falls Short at Knightdale

WEB CAST.

The crowd wasn't as big as it will be when Duke and North Carolina get together later this year, but the intesty level was much the same and on Thursday night at Knightdale High School, the game had just about everything you could ask for, however, the Trojans rally fell short as the Knights came away with at four point, 78-74 win to make the GNRC race wide open.

Garner and Knightdale both raced out of the gate giving Garner play by play announcer, Chris Edwards all he could handle in the first quarter, but after the first stanza, Garner had a 29-24 lead.

After hitting just three shots from beyond the arc on Tuesday night, Garner came out on fire from downtown as they hit six first half three pointers including two from 6-7 Senior, Stephon Drane. The only problem was Knightdale was equally as hot from behind the line as they hit five shots to stay in the game. As the first half came to a close, the officials really let the two teams play and it became very physical which benifited Knightdale as they closed the half on a big run to take a 45-39 lead into the locker room.

The Knightdale lead would grow to as many as 12 points in the third quarter, but to the credit of the Trojans, they never let the game get away as the continued to chip away and the lead and eventually got the lead to singe digits.

Garner had the game down to under five points midway through the quarter, but after a touch foul that was call on Emmanuel McClain, one official whistled him for a technical foul which allowed Tyler Nicholson to go to the line and hit the two technical shots which put Knightdale back up and gave them some momentum as they closed the third quarter on a bit of a run as Garner had missed chances toward the end of the quarter which allowed the Knights to grow their lead to seven points, at 62-55 after three.

But, in the fourth quarter, the Trojans embodied the spirit of their Coach as they never quit even when the Knightdale lead grew to double digits, Garner continued to claw and eventually took the lead when Emmanuel McClain fired in a three from the right wing to give Garner their first lead since the first quarter at 68-66.

However, Knightdale fought right back and over the final four minutes of the game the two teams went back and forth, but in the end, the Knights made their free throws and came away with the 78-74 win over the Trojans.

With the loss, Garner's seven game winning streak has been snapped and the Trojans fall to 9-7 overall and 8-1 in the conference, meanwhile, Knightdale moves to 10-9 overall and just one game back of Garner in the conference race at 7-2.

The two teams will meet again on Wednesday night at 7:30 at Garner. But, before the Trojans and Knights renew their vows again this year, Garner will host SSS on Tuesday night also at 7:30.

**The Trojan Sports Network would like to thank Knightdale AD Guy Blough for his cooperation with tonight's web cast***

Scoring:
GARNER:
S. Drane 24, D. Johnson 20, E. McClain 15, G. Wilson 9, D. Anderson 3, D. Reed 2.

Varsity Girls Give Coach Mays a Happy Birthday

Varsity Girls basketball Coach, Hardrick Mays celebrated his birthday day on Thursday and his Lady Trojans gave him a very Happy Birthday with at 55-43 win over Knightdale.

After a slow start in the first quarter by both teams, Garner was the first team to really get things going in the second quarter as they took a double digit lead into the locker room at halftime.

The lead would continue to grow in the second half as the Lady Trojans were able to get out in transition as the fast break really helped Garner as they pulled away in the second half to come away with a 55-43 win over the Knights.

Garner will return home on Tuesday night as they host SSS at 6:00

JV Boys Lose First Conference Game of the Year

One the same night when the Varsity boys dropped their first conference game of the season, the JV Trojans lost their halftime lead as they fell to Knightdale 58-55 to split the season series with the Knights.

The Trojans took a 34-18 halftime lead after playing one of their best halves of basketball so far this year, but, Knightdale came storming back in the second half thanks mainly to the sloppy play of the Trojans.

Garner just couldn't overcome the tough second half as the fell to the Knights 58-55. With the loss, the Trojans fall to 12-3 overall and 9-1 in the conference.

They will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to SSS for a 7:30 tip off.

JV Boys Basketball Update

The JV Boys basketball team is currently on a roll in the GNRC as the Trojans are undefeated inside league play. After downing Harnett Central on Jan. 15 67-52, the JV Trojans put together one of the most improbable wins in recent memory.

Last Friday, the JV Trojans were down by 17 points at home to West Johnston as the third quarter came to a close. Then at the 4 minute mark of the final period, Garner finally decided to turn it on and proceeded to go on a 36 to 6 run to finish with a 76-63 overtime win.

Coach Bloms said after the game "It was the most impressive comeback that I've been a part of, the guys never gave up and despite playing a lackluster 3 and 1/2 quarters were able to dig down and pull out an important conference win. Our bigs, Rashaun Shaw and Cameron Redd really stepped it up and controlled to paint in the 2nd half."

SCORING:
Juwan Moye 20 pts, 5 rebs, 4 stls, 1 blk
Jarie Hicks 10 pts, 3 assts, 2 rebs, 2 stls
Rashaun Shaw 9 pts, 6 rebs
Cameron Redd 9 pts, 11 rebs
Demarcus Sanford 8 pts, 4 rebs, 3 assts, 2 stls

Following the comeback win over West Johnston, the Trojans again played a very tough conference game as they traveled to Clayton just two nights ago. This time, Garner didn't have to come from 17 down, but just like the game against the Wildcats, the game went to overtime and again the Trojans came out on top 68-66.

SCORING:
Larry Richardson 20 pts, 3 stls, 2 blks
Jarie Hicks 19 pts
Cameron Redd 12 pts, 12 rebs
Anthony Tucker 7 pts, 7 assts, 5 rebs, 2 stls, 2 blks

The Trojans are now 12-2 on the year with their only losses coming in the early part of the season, and Coach Bloms and his squad lead the conference with a perfect 9-0 Conference record.

The JV Boys are back at home on Thursday night (Jan. 28) as they host Knightdale at 7:30.

Trojans Blast Comets to Stay Perfect in Conference

WEB CAST.

Coming into Conference play, Coach Gray had one goal and that was to be the first team to win all their conference games, and on Tuesday night, the Trojans took another step toward achieving their goal as they blasted Clayton 73-49.

Garner and Clayton played a typical Garner/Clayton first quarter as the Trojans held a 17-13 after one, but in the second quarter, Garner really began to separate themselves thanks to the inside play of Stephon Drane and D'Andre Anderson, and Garner also had a great defensive effort in the first half on Clayton's Adam Parrish.

Parrish scored 17 points and hit five three pointers in the first meeting with Garner, but in the first half of Tuesday's game, Parris had yet to score a point as the Trojans had a 34-23 halftime lead.

Clayton began to come back on Garner in the third quarter, as the Trojans left a lot of points at the free throw line, but they made up for those lost points with style points as Stephon Drane and D'Andre Anderson got loose for some impressive dunks to put the game out of reach as the Trojans opened up a 20 point lead early in the fourth quarter and never looked back as for the second straight year, Garner sweeps the season series with the Comets.

Garner (9-6, 8-0) extends their win streak to seven games, while Clayton (14-5, 6-3) had their eight game winning streak snapped.

***NOTE: The Varsity Game that was originally scheduled for Friday has a good chance of being moved to THURSDAY NIGHT at Knightdale due to a possible winter storm. A final decision will be posted as soon as it becomes known. Stay tuned***

Scoring:
Clayton: A. Parrish 11, J. Getty 11, S. Clayton 7, D. Johnson 6, K. Frasier 6, T. Jones 3, T. Williams 3.
GARNER: S. Drane 21, G. Wilson 14, D. Anderson 13, D. Johnson 10, D. Reed 6, E. McClain 5, J. McClain 4

Varsity Girls Fall to Comets

The Varsity Girls had another tough test on Tuesday night as they faced a Clayton team that was sitting atop the conference along with Southeast Raleigh.

But, for the first quarter, Garner hung with the Comets, however, in the second quarter, Clayton began to pull away and the Lady Trojans just couldn't stay with the Comets quickness as the Comets downed Garner 68-41.

Adding, but not taking away

More of the above technique required

A lot of life seems to go like this - adding more new things to do, but not removing anything. So there is less and less time. Work counts as one of those things that ‘has to be added’, especially if you are self employed. Time for family, friends and leisure (in my case climbing) counts as one of those things that ‘has to be sacrificed’. Too many sacrifices in a row create a bit of a crisis. And for me, thats what’s happened now.

Over the past three or four years, I’ve worked more and more and more. And every piece of added work has made me less happy. Thats not to say I don’t enjoy the work. I enjoy all of the things I do. But not the balance of them. There’s just too much of one ingredient thats blotting out everything else. Bit of a mess.

So now I just cannot continue at this pace of getting up and working straight through to the wee hours every day of my life, trying to fit in training and life on the end. Along the slide of this slippery slope I’ve forgotten what options I have for replacing new activities for old, rather than just adding, and generally fitting everything in better.

Like any big and deep change I’m going to have to be pretty firm about it. I’m hoping it follows the pattern of other really important changes that you know are the right and necessary thing to do; the hardest thing to initiate the move and the easiest thing to finish it.

Marshall-Smith week

Jimmy Marshall

Those of you know know anything at all about winter climbing in Scotland will know instantly what I’m talking about just from the title. In 1960 Jimmy Marshall and Robin Smith  climbed 6 routes on Ben Nevis in one week that were all cutting edge at the time. Some of them were first ascents such as the famous Smith’s Route (V, 5) but the others like Point Five Gully were done very much faster than previous ascents. The week has been a bit legendary ever since as pretty much the finest achievement in ice climbing using the step cutting technique and a formidable display of mountaineering skill and fitness that was not surpassed for man years or even decades.

Anyway, It’s 50 years since the famous week next month, and myself and Andy Turner will be trying to repeat the week as away of marking it personally and on film. It’s something that a few of us in Lochaber had been talking about doing for a while, but Mike Pescod from the Fort William Mountain Festival really galvanised us into action over the past few weeks, roping in Diff from Hot Aches to film us during the week and arranging for us to talk at the festival after the week about our thoughts on it and it’s importance as a great story and achievement in Scottish winter climbing.

There is more on it on the FWMF’s page on it here. But our plan is to climb the 6 routes on  Feb 6th-12th, repeat the Grey Corries traverse as Smith and Marshall did for their ‘rest day’ on the 13th and talk about it on Marshall night at the festival on the Sunday night (14th) where Jimmy himself will be making an appearance. I’m not so sure if we’ll repeat the theft of the Fort William pub’s set of Draughts and ensuring arrest by the polis, but we’ll see ; ) All very exciting.

I’ll talk more about it next week. And I’ll be tweeting, blogging etc during the week of climbs itself. Right now I’m off to train on the board and get ready for travelling to Dublin for my coaching and lecture there…

Andy Kirkpatrick is on at the FWMF on the Friday night (12th) and Diff’s lecture on Sat 13th is called ‘Climbers I’ve shot and some I’d like to shoot’ which I’m hearing is a good laugh. See y’all there.

Climb Swaziland

Andrew points to Climb Swaziland which is a cool looking project helping kids without too many opportunities in Swaziland to get into climbing on Swazi sandstone! They are looking for climber’s used gear to help them make it happen and support in other ways. They also have some info and topos on the climbing around there. Check it here.

Things coming up

I’ve just written an article discussing in a bit more depth my psychological preparation for Echo Wall on PlanetMountain.com here.

I’ve got some lectures coming up in these places:

Dublin this Thursday, 28th January

EICA Ratho 4th February - masterclasses during the day and a lecture in the evening.

Fort William Mountain Festival Sunday Feb 14th - talking about the Marshall/Smith week re-enactment.

Llanberis LLAMF March 6th lecture and masterclasses the following day.

Details of all those lecture on my lectures page as always.

How To Read and Write English

Texting: not the work of the dark lord himself & actually quite good for you

As if by magic, having posted yesterday on texting being linked to young people's illiteracy, a news article crops up saying that texting is actually good for you and can be shown to improve young people's communication and literacy skills. It's based on research by Clare Wood and Bev Plester and their team at Coventry University (the same people who brought you this and this) who say this about their work:

We began studying in this area initially to see if there was any evidence of association between text abbreviation use and literacy skills at all, after such a negative portrayal of the activity in the media. We were surprised to learn that not only was the association strong, but that textism use was actually driving the development of phonological awareness and reading skill in children. Texting also appears to be a valuable form of contact with written English for many children, which enables them to practise reading and spelling on a daily basis.

Emma Jackson and Lucy Hart, members of the Coventry team, did a talk for teachers at SFX last summer as part of our QIA Beacon Colleges workshops and their earlier research can be seen in this Powerpoint on the resources site, while this most recent research is available as a pdf here.

This is all good stuff for ENGA3 Language Discourses (A2 students) but equally it's excellent material for Language & Mode ENGA1, especially the material here on the British Academy's news release about the research.

  • Shortenings: cutting the end off a word, losing more than one letter, e.g. bro = brother.
  • Contractions: cutting letters, usually vowels, out of the middle of a word, e.g. txt, plz, hmwrk.
  • G Clippings: cutting off only the final g in a word, e.g. goin, comin, workin, swimmin.
  • Other Clippings: cutting off other final letters, e.g. I’v, hav, wil, com.
  • Symbols: using symbols, including emoticons, and x used symbolically, e.g. &, @, ;-), :-p, xxx.
  • Initialisms: a word or group of words is represented by its initial letter, e.g. tb = text back, lol = laughing out loud, gf = girlfriend.
  • Letter/Number Homophones: a letter or number is used to take the place of a phoneme, syllable, or word of the same sound, e.g. 4, 2, l8r, u, r, c.
  • Non-conventional Spellings: a word is spelled according to legitimate English phoneme-grapheme conversion rules, but not the conventional one used to spell the word, e.g. nite, cum, fone, skool.
  • Accent Stylisation: a word is spelled as it is pronounced in casual speech, e.g. gonna, wiv = with, av = have, wanna, elp = help, anuva = another.
  • Missing Apostrophes: left out either in possessive or traditional contraction form, e.g. dads, Im, Ive, cant.

Texting: the work of Satan himself

According to an article in last week's Times, texting is not only making teens' vocabulary shrink to an almost caveman-like 800 words a day but it's also making them unemployable. The article quotes research commissioned by the government which states that teenagers "are avoiding using a broad vocabulary and complex words in favour of the abbreviated “teenspeak” of text messages, social networking sites and internet chat rooms". So, it's not just texting then , but all computer-mediated communication that's to blame.

It's another moral panic which stokes the public's fears about a new generation of illiterate imbeciles being spawned by feckless parents and incompetent teachers. And do u no wot? It's rubbish. But at least it's exactly the kind of article you can use in preparation for the Language Discourses part of ENGA3 and this article even manages to quote a proper linguist, the ubiquitous (look it up and improve your meagre vocabulary if you don't know what this word means) David Crystal:

David Crystal, honorary professor of linguistics at Bangor University in Wales, said many experts underestimate the breadth and complexity of a teenager’s vocabulary. “The real issue here is that people object to kids having a good vocabulary for hip-hop and not for politics. They have an articulate vocabulary for the kind of things they want to talk about,” he said. “Few academics get anywhere near measuring that vocabulary.”

Go David, go David. We're gonna party, like it's your birthday. Etc.

An encouraging aspect of an otherwise scaremongering article is the mention of the government 's Communication Czar, Jean Gross, and her plan to get teenagers to record language being used in workplaces and for them to study what they record. Sounds to me like what we've been doing very successfully for the last 10 years with English Language A level...

Edited on 23rd Jan to add: David Crystal has a very good post on this on his own blog here.

Trojans Survive Wildcat Comeback; Win in OT

WEB CAST.

Coming into play on Friday night, Coach Eddie Gray and his Garner Trojans were looking to extend their current winning streak to six games, but in order to keep that winning streak going, they would have to defeat a West Johnston team that was 6-1 at home this season and had already defeated Knightdale at home in overtime earlier in the season, and after a slow start Garner jumped out to a big lead only to see West Johnston send the game to overtime, but the Trojans survived and hung on to win 70-62.

Garner was coming off a week layoff as they took a break to finish exams and it took a while for the Trojans to get rolling as West Johnston took a 14-12 lead after the first quarter.

But, as the first quarter ended Coach Gray had a stern message for his club and Garner responded on both ends of the floor as Garner scored 16 points in the second quarter while holding West Johnston to just one point in the second quarter to take a 28-15 lead into the locker room.

Garner's lead would continue to grow in the third quarter thanks to a very balanced effort, but as the game wore on, the Trojans' built up a 11 point lead after the third quarter, however, Garner was in some deep foul trouble and that would prove to be very costly late in the game.

West Johnston relied on the outside shot to climb back into the game in the fourth quarter as Mark Parker hit three big shots from beyond the arc and Shaq Dance also contributed with 16 second half points including 5 three pointer's to put the Wildcats right back in the game.

That's when things began to go south for the Trojans as both Emmanuel McClain and Gavin Wilson fouled out in the fourth quarter, and that lead to some offensive confusion late in the game for the Trojans and with Garner leading by two late in the fourth quarter, Ben Jacobs moved his way to the left baseline for a wide open lay up to tie the game at 52 as Garner's desperation heave was no good and the Trojans were playing their first overtime game of the year.

In the extra stanza, Garner dominated from the opening tip, thanks mainly to the play of Donald Johnson who went to the line a total of 21 times in the second half and overtime periods and of those 21, Johnson made 16 of his shots from the charity strip and after scoring just two points in the first half, Johnson scored 22 in the second half and overtime to lead the Trojans.

West Johnston, who was out the services of Jacob McNeill and Sean Johnson, who were both out due to injuries, had no match for the deeper Trojan bench and Garner began to pull away in overtime as they remained perfect in the conference with at 70-62 win over West Johnston.

Garner (8-6; 7-0) now leads the all-time series with West Johnston (8-6; 4-3) 11-2 and the Trojans will now prepare for a very difficult week as they will host Clayton on Tuesday night at 7:30 then travel to Knightdale on Friday also at 7:30.

Knightdale is currently second in the conference while Clayton is third.

Scoring:
GARNER:
D. Johnson 24, J. McClain 15, G. Wilson 12, S. Drane 6, D. Anderson 6, M. Sloan 6, E. McClain 1.

Varsity Girls Sweep Season Series With Wildcats

The Lady Trojans have had their ups and downs this year but on Friday night, Garner came out hitting on all cylinders and after scoring just seven points in the first quarter, the Lady Trojans came out on fire in the final three quarters.

Garner's lead grew to 21 points in the latter parts of the third quarter. West Johnston tried to battle back, but Garner was too much on this night as the Lady Trojans swept the season series from the Wildcats with at 51-39 win.

They are back at home on Tuesday night at 6:00 when they host Clayton.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Generic Structure

Definition and time

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon was a man-made structure that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Hanging Gardens originated in approximately 605 B.C.

Description of purpose

Babylon, the capital of Babylonia, was built between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers, where modern Baghdad, in Iraq, stands today. King Nebuchadnezzar built the Hanging Gardens for his wife, Amytis, who was the Princess of the Medes.

Description of features

and their use

The Hanging Gardens was built on arches overlooking the city walls. The lowest terrace was twenty-four metres off the ground and each succeeding terrace was three metres higher. There were about six terraces, so that the topmost terrace was forty metres off the ground.

Description of physical

Features (appearance)

The first stage of the building was a series of brick archways that were the same height as the city walls. Underneath them lay a shaded courtyard. On top of these arches, the Babylonians built long brick terraces in rows. These terraces were lined with lead, to hold the water, then covered with thick layers of fertile soil. Many exotic plants and trees were planted. Each of flower-bed was the size of a tennis court and the area of each terrace was thirty metres long by five metres long by five metres wide.

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

The aim of descriptive text is basically to give information. The social context of this text is to describe a specific thing, animal, or human being ( certain thing, our pets or someone we know well), it is different from report text which describes something in general ( for example a specific of animal species, an architect of certain era, and so on).

We use the descriptive text to describe a particular person, place or thing. It focuses on specific participants. The description includes parts, qualities and characteristics.

The generic structure of a descriptive text is as follows :

• Classification or Definition

• Description of features in order of importance.

The vocabularies often used in a descriptive text are the words which are related to names of places : locations, destinations, the functions, the appearances and the evidences if needed (for building). For animals, the words are used to describe the classification, the physical appearances, habitats, behaviour, life cycles, and the function. The language is neutral or objective.

Descriptive Text often uses the form of be : present or past and one of have form. The present tense is often used in this kind of text, but sometimes we can also use the past tense to describe a certain thing which is extinct or not available nowadays. The passive form is also often used here.

The language functions, the grammar and also the words which are often used in a descriptive text are :

• Defining : a/the .......was a .....

• Describing features (properties) : adjectives

• Expressing cause and effect : because, so, as a result

Descriptive text is often equipped with photos, diagrams, maps and so on.
